They say his full name (Malcolm Reynolds) several times in the series so how is it that so many people didn't realize this?

This. I'd understand not knowing something like Wash's full name, but, yeah, Mal's was repeated quite a few times. Maybe the OP forgot? *shrug*

i wasn't really an avid watcher, must have somehow missed out on his full name. i'm not really good with names, clearly.

This. If it was only once, I could understand blinking and missing it, but they use his full name quite often IIRC.
