Well, it's also implied -- no, it's outright stated -- that Holmes is the roommate/friend/lover from hell. He shoots walls, he shoots up, he gets manic, he gets completely depressed, you never know what's going to come out of his mouth when you introduce him to someone, and he's lousy at remembering to do things for you even while he's depending on you to do things for him. The Ritchie movies are set ten years into the friendship, so Watson's had plenty of time to become disillusioned. And Holmes, canonically, keeps saying that emotions and things like love interfere with his mental processes. Watson may have gone to Mary because he needs affection and stability as well as adrenalin.

Me, I think Watson loves them both. But I've thought that for years. And Holmes is lousy in any 'verse at expressing affection.
