I don't have a huge paragraph for this secret just:

I AGREE.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-11 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, because the only valid Optimus is Saint Optimus the Pure and Always Right.

I liked that he was actually, you know, changed by the fact that he was in a goddamned war for once. You can't always afford mercy in a war. It sucks, yeah. But them's the brakes.

[identity profile] rebecky-mo.livejournal.com 2012-01-11 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
You are aware that's Ironhide, right? The secret has nothing to do with Optimus.

...Oh. You're right.

Sorry, I'm used to people being pissed that Optimus wasn't a saint as opposed to anything else. Add in the fever I have and maybe I shouldn't be posting.

[identity profile] rebecky-mo.livejournal.com 2012-01-11 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
No worries; I've seen that argument about Optimus before too on more than one occasion (hope you feels better, btw).

Honestly, I get where Optimus was coming from in DotM, what with his former mentor/leader's planning to betray the Autobots forever ago, and the end of his adopted planet a hair's breadth away...

(Anonymous) 2012-01-11 11:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Not to mention, if you know anything about the backstory, guy's been through a lot of betrayal and being stabbed in the back. So I honestly preferred that he was like this--affected by all of that and the fact he was in the middle of leading a faction in a war--as opposed to always remaining the merciful saint, despite how many time it used to bite him in the metallic ass. Especially in the same continuity, so it wasn't like it was a different Optimus. He just never learned.

Christ, it was even worse than TF:TM what Michael Bay did to him.

[identity profile] rebecky-mo.livejournal.com 2012-01-11 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
I still haven't watched Transfromers: The Movie. I guess that makes me a bad fan, but knowing what happens in it, I just can't bring myself to do it...

I had no warning with Dark of the Moon though. Damn you, Bay! And though we weren't as attached to him, I mourned poor Wheeljack Q as well. A brilliant mind lost...

I was only a very small person when TF:TM came out and in it I got to watch nearly ALL my favourite characters plus my childhood hero get killed in the first, what, ten or fifteen minutes? And they didn't come back at the end of the movie. THAT SHIT SCARS YOU, FUCK YOU HASBRO.

And then Michael Bay went and did it again ugh I hate him and everything he stands for (except Bad Boys I & II and also explosions).

[identity profile] captain-emily.livejournal.com 2012-01-11 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't mourn Wheeljack/Q because in my eyes, that was so not Wheeljack. Jack was way too tough to be that squirrely little bot.

[identity profile] rebecky-mo.livejournal.com 2012-01-11 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
My younger sister is usually unaffected by movie deaths and the like, but Ironhide was her favorite character in the Bayverse trilogy. She cried like a baby when he met his end.

What pisses me off is that no one ever got to grieve in any of the Bayverse movies. Will was right there, dammit. Give us 10 seconds of him flipping out/mourning quietly, for God's sake.

[identity profile] fierceawakening.livejournal.com 2012-01-11 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
This. I convinced myself Optimus was grieving inwardly for Jazz and only allowing himself one public moment to sigh a little, so it never bothered me, but... then it became abundantly clear Michael Bay doesn't know what grief is.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-11 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
I will never forgive Michael Bay for making those movies in the first place. Armageddon, The Island, The Rock... all movies that weren't good but weren't bad either and were quite enjoyable - and then came Transformers and Bay went insane for good.

[identity profile] agentak.livejournal.com 2012-01-11 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
I screamed. In the theater.

[identity profile] xxsomeoneelsexx.livejournal.com 2012-01-11 10:37 am (UTC)(link)
Hearing the spoiler about his death was what convinced me to torrent the movie instead of paying for it. I was like "well, if it's good, I'll go to the theater and put down some money to see it properly"... ahaha no. That movie was a fucking snuff porno, man, and Ironhide's death was the worst part. So flagrantly gratuitous and drawn-out and dhsjnesjdmfjjdkd I have too many feelings about this

(Anonymous) 2012-01-11 11:35 am (UTC)(link)
...But they were still in the middle of fighting a war. Did you seriously expect there wouldn't be casualties?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-11 05:15 pm (UTC)(link)
There can be casualties without rolling heads, robo blood and people turning into mush. It was just tasteless, even for a Michael Bay action flick.
And Optimus murdering the red guy, even as he begged him not to do it was so not Optimus. It was worse than in the second one where he was all like "give me your face". All just a wet fantasy for gore fans.

[identity profile] xxsomeoneelsexx.livejournal.com 2012-01-11 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, you may have missed my point. (Not surprising, since I was ranting more than explaining myself, lol) My complaint was not that characters were dying so much as their deaths were so horrible and overdone. With Ironhide, we get his entire body rusting away while he's still alive, and it's just grotesque.

Starscream is another example of this. He gets stabbed in the eye (I am easily squicked by eye stuff so this was extra dsfgassfd for me) and proceeds to flail around and scream for... I can't even remember how long before finally biting it. At least a full minute. It was just so horrible and overwrought that "snuff porno" is the only way I can accurately describe it.

[identity profile] captain-emily.livejournal.com 2012-01-11 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree so freaking much. I cried like a baby when he died. Ironhide was always one of my favorite characters throughout all of the various canons, not just Bayverse.

Then again, I'd already guessed that he was going to die before I ever saw the movie. Killing off an established character is a cheap way of getting a reaction from the audience. Ratchet was the medic, so killing him off would royally screw up the verse and potentially cause issues in future movies. Bumblebee is one of the cash cows, so he's safe. Optimus is another money-grossing character, and he already died in the second movie. Plus, he's Optimus Motherfuckin' Prime, so even if he did die (again), he'd just come back (again). Sideswipe had no character development whatsoever and the twins weren't coming back, so that just left Ironhide. When Hide started being a major badass in the movie, I knew that I'd guessed right and he was a goner.

As someone else mentioned above, it might not have been so bad if they had taken a moment to grieve, but that never happened. It was just completely glossed over.
