I'm exactly the same - so much so that this actually is a secret of mine - but I don't think I'm a sadist in the slightest.

What I enjoy is the new depth a character often gains through negative treatment - they have to work hard to overcome such an experience as, say, torture or abuse, and I enjoy reading about/seeing their psychological and emotional development as they deal with what's happened to them. I find it intriguing how different authors have different characters deal with their situation (either woobie-fying the character or making them steely/determined not to show suffering etc) and how it affects them and their actions thereafter.

Then again, I do have a rather unhealthy obsession with behavioural psychology, as well as criminal psychology, so the affects of negative experiences on a person's psyche is unsettlingly interesting to me. ;)
