I used to read quite a lot of angst and darkfic in the past. I think that in part it was because it made me feel strongly (I felt somewhat numb/unfeeling then) and because it helped me purge some negative feelings I had trouble dealing with in real life. Especially because after heavy fictional angst RL problems seem smaller.

It had to be believable angst, though; I tried reading a couple of fics that were just too unbelievable because there was nothing to balance the angst (and then his puppy was killed and he slipped in the blood and hit his head and then the nurse tried to kill him and), just an endless layering of angst without any kind of dealing or closure with the previous stuff. Well-written angst is good, though I haven't managed to reread most angsty fics, no matter how much I liked them the first time. I also still have very clear mental images of some of them, even stuff I read a very long time ago.

For darkfic I have read badfic, too, as it was more about the shock and horror aspect than the angst, really. Well, unless it had a (sort of) happy ending, in which case it was about survival in difficult situations etc. To be honest, I see darkfic as kind of similar to e.g. Battle Royale; there is some unbearable situation that needs to be dealt with and some survive (alive, but mentally and possibly physically scarred), some are stabbed in the back by friends or strangers, whereas some choose to jump from a cliff. Kind of a how would you or that character deal in this situation sort of thing.
