Have you tried joining any ship or character based communities? I think that would be a good baby-step into involving yourself in the fandom.

let me guess: one of the places you tried was ontd_glee? that is the very definition of hell. no wonder you're terrified. there are some safe comms out there. if you like any particular pairing you should post it here and you might get some great recommendations.

Go to your favourite character's community and also your favourite pairing's. If you have a thin skin, do NOT go to ONTD_Glee and/or ONTD's Glee tags. You can lurk, but if you comment be prepared for snark and bitchiness from people who disagree with you.

Yup some of a fans and communities are scary as hell.

It is good if you find a community for your pairing as some a lovely (I am a Klaine shipper myself)

I do not get people who oepnly bach others for liking a pairing...don't shove your pairing down my throat and I won't shove mine down yours XD

I was very lucky when I joined the fandom as I also had a flat mate who ended up being a fan...we had different pairings we liked but we both had open minds... it ment we could reccomend places to each other XD

*hugs* Bigger fandoms can be intimidating...but there are always specific comms for the pairings/chars you like.

I multiship and tend to like odd crossover pairings. :)

The fandom/hatedom/everything in between is fucking INSANE, but there are good aspects. I've never seen a fandom with so much, like, independent material. There's WAY more RP than I'm used to with most TV shows, and there's a ton of really interesting, creative AU. ...Basically, the fandom has better writers than the show does, and expands upon the characters in smart and--dare I say it--logical ways. And this is coming from someone with a very strong love-hate relationship with the show. So...have fun, but tread carefully. And don't get in the middle of the Kurtofsky/Klaine argument.

Unless you get in the middle of a shipper war, the fandom is great. If you aren't into "ontd culture", you should probably stay away from ontd_glee though. There are a lot of people for whom this is their first fandom, first ship, first fic, whatevs, so it seems to be pretty low-pressure.
