[Black Lagoon]

(Anonymous) 2012-01-13 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
OP Here.

To clarify, I'm a guy.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-13 04:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I get that. There are a lot of male characters I LOVE because I really would love to be them. But alas, I am a girl.

[identity profile] rosehiptea.livejournal.com 2012-01-13 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Are you me?

Well, no, you are not me, but yeah.

Also maybe occasionally I want to do them...

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2012-01-13 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Rock on, OP. Revy is fabulous.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-13 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Hah. I'm the opposite. I like to imagine being their girlfriends. I don't have quite enough mindless agression (and to be quite frank, stupidity) to be that sort of badass.

[identity profile] spiegel11th.livejournal.com 2012-01-13 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
That one was my absolute favourite omake.

Dat Femme!Dutch *__*

I kind of feel the same way, minus the heavily sexualized part. (I mean seriously those boobs must be causing her to have some major back problems.)

At least she wears a sensible exercise bra.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-13 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
IDK, doesn't look like it's offering much actual support. I know I have to get some seriously strong sport's bras for myself, and I'm only a C cup.

[identity profile] seiberwing.livejournal.com 2012-01-13 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Nothing wrong with that. Except maybe the murder part.

[identity profile] kindlycoyote.livejournal.com 2012-01-13 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I can see the appeal even if I dislike the prevalence of the archetype. (I don't think it is a bad archetype when used with a fully developed character, just that it is overused and taken waaaaay too much as the sole 'strong woman' type.)

And I also get the wanting to be someone of a different gender. What I wouldn't give to be the devil-may-care bad-ass trickster type... *daydreams happily*

[identity profile] rayiroth.livejournal.com 2012-01-13 11:26 am (UTC)(link)
I think Revy is pretty well done. She's that archtype, but it's also explained why and it wasn't played down as that her bloodlust is more a problem than something good.

[identity profile] kindlycoyote.livejournal.com 2012-01-13 02:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not familiar with the character in the picture, so I will take your word for it. I was just more talking 'in general' as I assumed the reason of this secret is because the backlash against such a type of female characters that happens. :)

[identity profile] rayiroth.livejournal.com 2012-01-13 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, fair enough. Black Lagoon is pretty well done. For something so over the top, it has the kind of humanity waved in there that I have not seen before.

Things like say, Revy is a homicidal maniac, to the degree that she was detrimental to her employer. The person who would stand up against her bullshit? Rock the timid salary man.

I love the entire cast.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-14 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

It's hard to put your finger on it, but Revy certainly seems to stand out against the standard '~strong female characters~'. I guess part of it is because she's actually portrayed as a bit of a psychopathic fuck up, and her headstrongness tends to have consequences, they don't stray away from the reality of a lot of the violence either. But there's more to it then that.

And I guess the first fight between her and Roberta comes to mind. What could easily have become 'lol sexy hot girls fight whilst we sexualise them' was instead 'two women exchange blows until they've punched each others faces into bloody ruin'.

Plus the women have actual agency within the series which helps.

[identity profile] rayiroth.livejournal.com 2012-01-14 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
YES YES YES YES YES.

That and the Roberta fight is less about "hey guys watch to hot chicks" as you said, but more about two people with their own agenda and their own goals having a punch out. I think that changes a lot.

Most Black Lagoon characters are pretty amazing. I love how Janet is really a badass, she just happened to have her intro as a badass outside of her comfortzone. And Rock? Possibly the most fucked up character in the series without the violence like everyone else.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-13 01:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Been there. My friends thought it was hilarious when I said I would want to be a female RP character of mine - but it had nothing to do with her being female, and everything to do with her being lithe, athletic and not tired out by five minutes of cardio exercise!

[identity profile] kindlycoyote.livejournal.com 2012-01-13 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Hah, I know, right? Plus a lot of people aren't that attached to gender. I personally like being a girl, but it would be just as cool being a boy IMO. My brain is very 'meh, whatever you have, work it!' XD Some people act as if being the opposite gender would be a death sentence. :/

[identity profile] lashiec.livejournal.com 2012-01-13 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Meeeeeeee too~

[identity profile] rayiroth.livejournal.com 2012-01-13 11:27 am (UTC)(link)
I would say I don't want to be sexualised, but I see what you mean. I'd love to be Revy Mary sue, except you know, not for real. Time and place and real life isn't a place for that.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-13 12:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Opposite. Just want to be the middle-of-the-road in terms of femininity female I am, having her way with those badass ladies. Michelle Rodriguez...
