It's a very sensitive and deeply personal issue that a lot of people get extremely passionate about on both sides of the debate, so I'd say putting a trigger warning on it would be justified.

But does it actually, seriously trigger you into PTSD flashbacks? If it doesn't, then you're just watering down the idea of trigger warnings until they get harder and harder to take seriously.

Well, no, I already said upthread that I should have said "regular warning" instead of TW. That was my fault. I agree that the concept of TW has been watered down in fandom, but it's still a good idea to warn for content. I don't think that, say, talking about drug use is triggering for anyone, bit I still think it's something that should be warned for. I wouldn't use a TW though.

DA. Yes, that was my issue with your first comment.

But... if abortion is, as you say, not a common trigger, should it be warned for? How about gore or violence? Why not things like death in general, illness in general, *isms in general, and so forth? Should religion be warned for? They are all sensitive topics.

Warnings for "controversial material" on this comm would mean a warning on everything. :\

What is or isn't a trigger is an issue that doesn't have clear boundaries, so it ought to be determined by common sense. Unfortunately, common sense is in extremely short supply on the internet :\

DA

I don't think that, say, talking about drug use is triggering for anyone

From what I've heard, it can be, because it can trigger a relapse in some people.

Indeed, it is very much a valid trigger warning.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-16 12:59 pm (UTC)(link)
that isn't what a trigger is asshole
