oh my god the cocacola comparison is kind of genius

(Anonymous) 2012-01-17 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I want to see the source picture for this secret.

holy crap, does that side-by-side comparison ever highlight how shitty Code Geass's art is.

To be fair, Light doesn't look so great in that pic either. What is his nose. :P

I love both of them, but you're totally right lol :(

The problem with Utilitarianism is that in order to make the best decision for the most amount of people, you have to know what the best decision would be. People don't know nearly as much as they think they do. Tinkering with social order always has unintended consequences, as the rest of humanity isn't you, doesn't see things the way you do, and acts differently than you think they would. It's like an amateur who knows enough html to make a good livejournal post getting into the main computer programming and thinking s/he can improve the computer. Or someone who knows how to use a screwdriver and wrench trying to fix a transmission.

NO THEY DON'T
That line of thinking is morally flawed

(Anonymous) 2012-01-17 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
no.

[identity profile] birdboy2000.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Agree in the case of Lelouch, disagree in the case of Light. I'm far from opposed to revolutionary change, and Lelouch struck me as if not good at least better than the alternative, but god complexes and mass murder don't sit well with me.

[identity profile] noskidaddle.livejournal.com 2012-01-18 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
This pretty much sums up my feelings for both characters. I normally wind up siding with the protagonist, but Light went overboard which automatically made me hate him.

[identity profile] lovelycudy.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, no. The problem with that line of thinking is that there's no true way of knowing what the greater good is. And even if you think you know it... there's really no way to know all the possible consequences of it. And there are some things that are just wrong.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-17 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
on the surface it seems like a good idea, I won't lie. I agree with a lot of ideology in this mindset: it would be a much safer world, after all. But once you really start thinking about it, it doesn't hold water. Who would be the right person to make these decisions? How would we know that person was without bias? NO one is without bias, so eventually someone would get crapped on in their world. Unless you're down with the oppression and/or subjugation of certain groups, it'd never really work.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-17 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
Lol. They're villain protagonists/dubiously antiheroic protagonists for a reason, anon.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-17 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
The problem with using Lelouch as an example of Utilitarianism is that he's so terrible at it. He's a classic online Utilitarian fanboy who talks about how great ends-justify-means logic is, and then falls apart because he's incapable of putting the end ahead of things he personally cares about.

The real irony is the best example of utilitarian logic in Code Geass is probably Suzaku. Millions of lives saved, just by killing one man, his father.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-18 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Light's way of going about it were ridiculously simplistic. It's basically saying capital punishment is the easiest way to a better society. WTF.
