People do realize that the only thing CLAMP had to do with Code Geass was the initial character designs, right?

[identity profile] santagrover.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
came here to say this
ext_81845: mashmyre cello facepalming, from the anime zz gundam (facepalm)

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Apparently not, people also don't know the difference between ORIGINAL CHARACTER DESIGNER and CHARACTER DESIGNER

Though Takahiro Kimura was obviously adapting the original CLAMP designs so some obvious CLAMP influence is there in the final design

(Anonymous) 2012-01-17 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
don't think so. I have a friend who goes on and on about Geass and how it's so typical of CLAMP and this and that. Er...

(Anonymous) 2012-01-17 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Curious anon here: what is the rationale behind Britannia symbolizing America? I was in Geass fandom during R2's run and haven't heard much about this.

Probably because in Japan, most foreign stuff = American, as far a most of them are concerned, and if you're gonna talk historically, America was the one who beat them in a war, occupied their country, re-wrote their constitution and government, and still keeps military bases on their country.

[identity profile] i-paint-the-sky.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
Plus this image from the show: http://i40.tinypic.com/2mcim8p.png

[identity profile] visp.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. Yeah, I can see why that would lead people to believe that the USA was in some way referred to. You know, subconsciously.

"legit cross"

that is an awesome blend of Britishism and Cali slang right there.

[identity profile] otakugal15.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Uh....it's meant to be a jab at the BIG countries of the WESTERN WORLD. Not JUST Britain. It jabs at America (pizza?), Britain, Canada, etc. Basically, they lump us all together in the way we tend to lump them and the other Asian countries together ("they all look the same, right dude?".

(Anonymous) 2012-01-17 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
That was advertising bro.

Think Darker Then Black.

Not some commentary on the obesity of Americans.

[identity profile] otakugal15.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't say it WAS a jab at obesity? Where'd you get that?

Hamburgers and pizza seem to be the foods many Asian countries tend to associate with us more than anything else (ncdonald's). Even if it WAS product placement....where does Pizza Hut originate? :|

It was still a jab at us and other western countries.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-17 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
I never thought to associate pizza with any other country than Italy. Other than that, my first thought is that it's popular in most Western countries, but I'd never think of the US specifically, unlike with hamburgers.

[identity profile] otakugal15.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmm. I tend to associate pizzas AND hamburgers. :P Pizza usually due to them being a go to thing to get when people have parties. That and there was one point when my family would get a pizza EVERY. FRIDAY. NIGHT there for a while. >.< I got so burned out on them, let me tell you. D:

[identity profile] visp.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
Abroad many people see it as American, since the popularized version of it is an American product. Kinda like how lattes aren't American but Starbucks is.

[identity profile] birdboy2000.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
This is because Britannia is a government in exile from Britain which somehow managed to conquer the entire Americas. As is written in CG's ridiculous alternate history. Heck, Britain never got conquered by the Anglo-Saxons - these are the ancestors of the Welsh and Bretons, not the English.

...but I still think of it as the British Empire on steroids.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-17 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Sunrise. You mean Sunrise. Considering you're talking about the plot and not the art, you don't mean CLAMP's lense. They only did the concept art.

ANYway, setting that aside, I don't really care who they're suppose to model. I just love them. The royal family is WHY I love that show so much

[identity profile] lovelycudy.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
Not in fandom (is it good) but it sounds like a pretty clear reference to me.

[identity profile] lovelycudy.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
It was supposed to be "is it good?", sorry

(Anonymous) 2012-01-17 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
...Just throwin' it out there, but I'm pretty sure this is the reason why a lot of people think Britannia is supposed to be America rather than Great Britain.
Image

[identity profile] lovelycudy.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
That makes sense. Why is it called Britannia, then?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-17 01:08 pm (UTC)(link)
because when Napoleon invaded England they fled to the American colonies, which had failed in their revolution

so it is Britannia

[identity profile] i-paint-the-sky.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was going to say the same thing. I don't know why it's called Britannia (maybe because it's the US & Canada? IDK) but it most definitely is portrayed in the show as being North American in origin, not British.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-17 01:09 pm (UTC)(link)
