what like anime characters in general or is this a cg-specific secret with background info i don't know about?

anime's style is meant to portray the characters as generally western-looking, it's not that they ARE white but looking white? i don't see why seeing them that way is a sign of "privilege" when it's not just white people who do that (case in point, me). though really, i don't think they look like ANY race, they look like aliens. but of all human races, yeah, most of them look more caucasian than any other race.

Yes, they do look like aliens.

Actually it's all due to animation history and some basic human principles, not "privilege" (at least as it's usually cited).

When you look at anime, most styles can be traced back to Astroboy. Astroboy imitated Western animation, particularly Betty Boop. Therefore we can really say that a lot of the anime visual style can be traced back to an American cartoon of a white woman.

The more general principle is that anime (and cartoon faces in general) are very non-specific. When a face is non-specific, we tend to project ourselves and our own culture onto it. This is why heros/heroines in animated movies tend to have very bland generic faces whereas the villains have a lot more caricature to them. If you doubt me, look at any Disney film. Even more striking is The Incredibles, where if you look at Syndrome (http://www.behindthevoiceactors.com/_img/chars/char_26472.jpg) and Mr. Incredible (http://www.ipadforums.net/wallpapers/data/508/Mr_Incredible.png) making pretty much the same expression, you can still tell Mr. Incredible is the hero because his face is slightly more generic (and again, this is a very subtle case).
