They look white, though *confused*

[identity profile] lovelycudy.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure I get your question? But those characters there look white to me.

[identity profile] green-glee.livejournal.com 2012-01-18 09:14 am (UTC)(link)
How do they look white was my question, but someone else already linked to an article that explains the issue way better than I could I guess.

That article makes a lot of sense. I have never thought about it, to be honest. I wonder if this extends to class and sexual orientation, too. Do we match characters with our own unless we are told they are different?

[identity profile] green-glee.livejournal.com 2012-01-18 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I never thought about it either, though when people talked about manga/anime characters looking caucasian I always found it odd (I read a lot of manga when I was younger and when a character was anything other than Japanese it would be specifically mentioned/portrayed).

I don't think it extends to those things though... I'm bisexual and still assume everyone's heterosexual by default (I don't try to act like that, but it's somehow automatically in my mind like that) and I'm kinda low-class and still assume people's class by their clothes and other status symbols. That's only me though, dunno, I think we project a lot of our experiences onto others.

It really IS an interesting topic!

I've been into just a few manga/anime series, but you are right, now that I think about it. What you say about not applying to other things makes sense, too.

Though, I have to admit I tend to see everyone as middle class unless something else is stated (my bad, I admit) and I tend to think everyone is undefined in terms of sexuality unless they say so. But that's probably just me, lol.

If you mean these characters specifically, yeah several of them are.

If you mean Japanese animation in general, check out these links:

Why do the Japanese draw themselves as white?

[identity profile] lovelycudy.livejournal.com 2012-01-17 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I mean the characters.

That's a very interesting article. I really enjoyed it. Thank you.

I'm not an anime fan, but that was still an interesting article. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you for that article! I'm just so pleased that some is actually addressing the same issues I've been pointing out for ages - that it's default and deviation (with a side helping of Betty Boop and non-Japanese coloring like blonde hair and blue eyes), not "OMG, racist - how could you not pick up these subtle clues!?" The problem is that both Western and anime cartoons have the same signals for default.
