I've never watched the show (never got far into the comics either).... But /really/?? People seriously use those fuckin' words?? Is it a thing the character says?


Jeeeezus. Even if it's "in character", why don't people get that using chink is just as offensive as "ni***r"? (in a work of fiction dealing with racist characters, obviously using whatever words they want to... but its diff when a person, not a character, uses that...)

do people refer to white/black fanfics as "fucking the n_____ out of him"?

Sadly a lot of people seem to be ignorant about this sort of thing. There was a recent bit of racefail involving a Papa John's employee referring to an Asian customer as "lady chinky eyes", and someone was trying to defend the use of the word "chink/chinky" by saying that it wasn't offensive, it was just stating facts and no different than describing a customer as "the black man." Um, yeah. Not really. It'd be more comparable to describing a black customer as "the n****r."

It's not just as offensive as nigger though.

That word has a specific, incredibly powerful history that differs from that of chink.

That doesn't make the latter okay or acceptable, but jesus christ everything bad is not exactly the same.

Let me codify this by saying I'm not into playing the old privilege olympics, not at all. And yet, here I am...

I am asian american, and this for me, is the most offensive word used to attack me for my race (apart from maybe zipperheads, but no one even remembers that anymore, thank god).

This is an english word used to put down a minority in the english-speaking language community. I know in different communities/places the connotations are different- but that's true for every derogatory word. Do light skin asians have it "better off" than dark skinned people in the places this word is used? Possibly, probably. I'm not here to debate that. I don't think that makes the use of the word, itself, any less fuckin offensive.

ALL non-whites have it harder in english speaking community. "Since black people have it harder than asians, it's okay to say chink, take 'em down a notch." That's what I feel like you're saying. And that's not the way I see it.

In this context (the phrase, to fuck the _____ out of someone), do you really think it's less offensive? Like, to the point where you'd let that slide, but if it was n____ you'd get offended?

Anyway, yeah, stickin' to my guns on this one.

I heavily highlighted the fact that they're both offensive and bad words, just that one is more so, and I hate the constant equivalence being drawn.

So basically oppression olympics if you want to boil it down to that.

I understand, I guess it's just like. "why can't we all just be offended"- and also like "why would anyone not second guess that phrase, even in a kink meme" .... That's the conclusion I was trying to effect by referencing the n-word. Everyone knows it's offensive, it's a line you don't cross, it's something that isn't ok/you gotta think about it _really hard_ before you say it... I'm not trying to say "this two things are exactly the same", but that they are both extremely offensive things that any sensible person should understand are not words you say lightly.... in that sense (in particular), I feel they are the same- or should be considered the same.

We can fight about this is so much worse, this isn't so bad, etc. But probably because it's a personal affront I'm more sensitive to that word.

Anyway sorry about oppression olympics? S'all good.

you're derailing 09019's point. they're explain their thoughts on racism and because you disagree with a degree of wrongness you're deflecting the conversation in another direction. you're totally derailing their point "chink is a very wrong slur" to "chink is not AS BAD as nigger PLEASE ALWAYS KEEP THAT IN MIND and check up with me if you have any questions about any other slurs i am the slur list master and i can tell you how they rank okay."

degrees of wrong and context and baggage of various slurs is a totally a valid discussion to be had, yeah, but not in this thread, where the discussion is asians being fetishized.
