I always read them as romantic in the original story. Or at least I was under the impression that the ending more or less said they got married when they grew up... maybe I'm projecting.

Yeah... Me too. I mean, it starts off as friendship, but it ends romantically, doesn't it?

But, I've also read "The Snow Queen" by Mercedes Lackey a couple of times, so maybe I'm mixing things up? >>;

The story's online here (http://www.online-literature.com/hans_christian_andersen/972/) (yay for public domain!). Personally I think the ending has romantic overtones and reads kind of like a wedding but there's nothing to explicitly say they're going to get married. I don't mind if Disney makes it a romance because I already ship it. xD
