Taking a quick look at Disney films over the years, it seems to me that there are at least as many, if not twice as many movies with male main characters than female(I will admit that a lot of those are movies with animal protagonists, while practically all of the movies with female protagonists have human main characters, which is something else very interesting that I've never thought about before and I'm not sure what it means). There is nothing bad about marketing a story to both sexes, not at all. Where I object is when they take one gender, female in this case (and so often when there is discrimination against a gender), and saying "no, this is not good enough".

And it's not a surprise, no - it's entirely expected. What Disney is doing is just one example of what society in general does. I'm not really blaming them specifically (no more than I would blame any other company), but I do think it's interesting and that it says so much about what we consider acceptable, and I don't think there's anything wrong with questioning it when something strikes me as wrong.
