Dunno, seems to me like a lot of the people in the LotR films were IMMENSELY POPULAR, and then sort of slipped back into semi-obscurity.

Maybe you can cross your fingers for Martin Freeman's fame to be short-lived, too? ;)

The Cumberbitches are pretty awful. It's mainly the crazies on tumblr I find worrying.

I'm on Tumblr and a huge fan of series, but I know where you're coming from. Some days I feel so embarrassed by some of the actions of the 'Cumberbitches' (urgh I hate that name), and can't bring myself to say I am a fan of Benedict Cumberbatch in public/other online sites in case I get side-eyed for the actions of the minority.

The worst had to have been when he split up with his girlfriend. Luckily I follow other sane fans who didn't say anything, but when I went into the Benedict Cumberbatch tag? Oh my days, I stepped out of that fucker and untracked it *shudder*

I've loved him for a whole bunch of years too. I love that through Sherlock he's getting his propers. And The Hobbit will get his face out more but tbh I think if he doesn't really play ball with the super hardcore...hounds (I ACTUALLY CANNOT think of another word) then he'll probably be okay. I doubt he's gonna ~move to Hollywood and shit, ya know? and he's had fame in England for awhile now. =)

I guess I'm a bit paranoid since there have been so many actors I thought were safe to stan for, but somehow as soon as they become well-known, even when they're not that good-looking, it happens. More than anything I'm afraid he'll become one of those people you get sick of hearing about.

Well, they do have a history of actually handing manips of characters having graphic sex to the actors. ;)

I love that too! He's so refreshingly average looking. And I don't mean in comparison to Cumberbatch- I love him but he does look like an alien to me- but rather to the whole of Hollywood and the media in general. Martin Freeman is just adorably normal.

Yeah, because all of the LOTR actors are off doing really well know projects and in the limelight of fame....

I actually have no fucking clue what any of the actors have done since the movies except for Elijah Wood voice acting for 9 and staring in Wilfred, neither of which are very popular. Hell, I'm surprised Orlando Bloom has gone off my radar, he was super popular even before LOTR.

The Hobbit is a bit different though since the focus will primarily be on Martin, and he's got Sherlock (which is becoming increasingly popular), so it's not like he'll suddenly fade into obscurity.

Not all us fans are scary nutwits who need to take a breather and step away from the PC. I can't stand some of the people I have encountered, mostly on Tumblr which sadly seems to be the epi-centre for the craziness; luckily (as I said above) I seem to follow the more sane fans of the fandom (though if one does slip through my radar they get unfollowed). It's when you track tags that you see just how disturbing some of the the fans of the series are.

But yeah, I can see where you're coming from. He's much like John Simm in a way; they both really do not like the media attention (i.e. the paps) and do not like to be hassled by fans outside of events (and you shouldn't hassle them when they're out doing their day-to-day thing, it's rude and paints a bad light for the rest of us).

My partner and I had a moment of amusing realization that we were both Freeman fan but from different shows when we found out about the Hobbit. He's excellent, and I hope things go well for him, both career and fandom wise, lolol.
