Oh man, this. Beautiful secret is so beautiful...

This. I love just looking at it.

You'll be a lot happier when you give up on comparing yourself to everyone else and focus writing fanfic just because you enjoy it. I know I was. (I write for several huge fandoms, but it's all crossovers. I had to accept a long time ago that I will never get the traffic that other writers do.)

(Anonymous) 2012-01-20 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
I feel that was too, nonny.

Stats are strange things. I have old stories at ff.n that get more hits a month than anything I've done recently, and I haven't updated that username in years. And it takes a while to build a following. The people I know best on AO3 are either frequently recommended or really good about mentioning their works on the comms I frequent.

Good luck, though.

I try to ignore the stats at AO3 and just enjoy writing and posting my fic. A lot of people just don't comment.

Also, comparing yourself to others never does any good. I know it's hard, but try to just enjoy doing your thing and don't pay attention to anyone else's stats.

Oh no, I totally do that too. DDDDD: I have one that's doing well, but when I see others that are way higher I'm like OH GOD NO I FAIL. Not very mature, but there you are.

I feel you, nonnie, I feel you. I've had internal fits of envy about works which are more popular than mine but "not up to my standards" or whatever bullshit I tell myself. I know it's irrational and I feel extremely guilty about it, but we can't always control our gut reactions to things. I feel like a bitch just admitting this much in public :/

Ultimately you just have to fight, fight and fight even harder to believe that:

a) There will always work that is "better" than yours by someone's measure. Don't feel bad about this. Those authors may have (in fact probably have, unless there's clear evidence to the contrary) spent years honing their skills. The more you write, the better you get - you will improve with time too.

b) In the end there's no objective measure to good art. Some work is popular just because it happened to go viral, because it got linked in the right place or just hit the right fandom buttons. Some work is popular because certain aspects are fantastic, even if other aspects are sub-par by some people's standards. You can't use hits or popularity as the only measure of quality.

b. ii) Most, if not all, work appeals to some people and not to others. There will always be certain people who like your work. Don't dismiss those people or think they're wrong just because they aren't in the majority. Just think - you are giving them something that those "more popular" works weren't able to give them.

c) It's always going to be most satisfying to write for yourself, and meet your own goals and standards. Focus on that first.

Wow that ended up way too long, sorry about that.
