I BELIEVE IN SHERLOCK HOL-

No? Okay.

This has bothered me for a while actually, but not because of the same reasons. I'm not a very fanatic shipper of anything.

But recently a lot of homoeroticism has popped up in the media, nearly always acknowledged by the creators of the series, the actors and the fans to the point where it's nodded to in the canon. (Examples are Sherlock- both film and series- and Supernatural).

And yet it's never made canon. It's like: it's alright to act gay, as long as you're not actually gay. It's pandering to the slash fangirls, and after a while it makes me uncomfortable. It's like they're fetishising being gay, which isn't the same as acceptance.

I don't know. Maybe I'm just a bit thin-skinned about this issue. Anyone else have thoughts on this?

I think it's really more like they're revisiting homosocial relationships, which have existed pretty much always but have become almost invisible in the last 50 years or so, since any male intimacy had come to be seen as homoerotic and that was seen as bad.

So yeah. I think they're trying to show those kinds of relationships, but they've kind of forgotten how to do that, so they end up relying on uncomfortable gay jokes etc.

(I'm also a total Sherlock/John shipper, and will always have my slash goggles firmly on where it concerns those two. But in general terms, refer to my above point).

No, I totally agree. As I said above, it feels sort of cowardly; they want to hint and nod and wink, but can't just outright show the characters kissing, or professing their love for each other, or laying in bed together (even filly clothed), or anything like that...

Either fetishising it, or turning it into a joke. (Haha! Like we would REALLY make these two main characters gay? What are you smoking, little fangirl?) Maybe both. It's absolutely maddening, especially when they go out of their way to create chemistry and innuendo.

MORIARTY WAS REAL.

Yeah, this issue is setting my teeth on edge more and more. Homoeroticism seems to be becoming a trendy thing nowadays, which is unfortunate. Because there are barely any canon gay relationships on mainstream television, and even fewer which are positive examples. It gets to the point where they're constantly dangling it in front of your face, and it becomes taunting, rather than tantalizing. "We all know putting these two characters together makes perfect sense, but we're too scared to write gay characters even though this it's the 21st century. So you'll just have to be satisfied with endless subtext FOREVER. Hope that's okay."

*sigh*

Male homoeroticism; the HAWT LESBEANZ WHEN IT'S CONVENIENT of the 21st century.

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 09:00 am (UTC)(link)
Meh... At least with the HAWT LESBEANZ, we actually get to see kissing, and sometimes even an actual relationship.
