I agree about the jokes and the references. I'm a shipper and at first I loved it, and there are times I still enjoy it. But I honestly think this is the creators' way of updating the canon. Because they too realize it would now be possible for them to be a couple. So they put that in, along with the mobiles and laptops. Of course, they're aware of fandom, so it's probably part fanservice now.

I do think this series had a bit too much though. One 'couple' joke every half hour or so? Everyone who knows them knows they're not. And not everyone who doesn't is going to assume they are, simply because our society is still heteronormative. And then there's the fact that most people they meet probably don't care. I certainly don't wonder about every two people I meet what their connection might be.

While I don't know if I actually want them to get together, I do know I want these jokes to die down/stop completely or for them to somehow follow through on it. I don't know how, but I want them to have a point.

This is odd but with all these epic bromances on tv why not epic sismance once in a while? The only show I can think of that had one was Ab Fab. Sad huh?

[identity profile] flowrs4ophelia.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 07:28 am (UTC)(link)
IKR? I'm sure part of the reason it isn't even an established cliche like bromances is because strong and open affection between women wouldn't even be seen as unique or special. But generally we're just way behind actually having a lot of works with any relationship with no man needed in the picture as the sole focus.

Even incredibly close friendships between women and men that are just friendships but have that non-romantic-life-partner vibe are practically non-existent. The only one I can think of that's kind of "bromance"-like is Mal and Zoe in Firefly, but that's not even close to being at the forefront of the story the way Kirk & Spock or Sam & Dean or Denny Crane & Alan Shore are.

And whenever a show does have that epic bond between a man and a woman, it almost always becomes romantic if the show goes on long enough - or even if they don't get married, there is occasional sex/a date/cosmic mix-ups that prevent them from dating/explicit, overt in-show acknowledgement that they have romantic feelings for each other.

Booth and Brennan from Bones are the most obvious example, and I think the leads from Castle as well, though I don't follow that.

Yeah, I've had epic friendships with women. I'd like to see portrayals in media. The thing is in the past women would get married off and have to leave their female friends to raise families and be a wife. Hell even then it was great to have friends because they'd support you with that. but men write things.

There are totally good sismances (hate that word, but love the concept) on TV! Cougar Town probably has the one that's most similar to the jokey fake-gay bromance thing (they joke about getting married to each other, etc.), but there are also lovely female friendships on Parks and Rec, Up All Night, Community to some extent... and dramas like Revenge and The Vampire Diaries also have pretty tight ones, albeit maybe less healthy.

[identity profile] finmagik.livejournal.com 2012-01-21 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, yes I forgot I don't watch all that much tv.

[identity profile] ncc-gqmf.livejournal.com 2012-01-21 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Probably not a good idea to be like I KNOW THEY DON'T EXIST, then.

You might like Cougar Town. You should give it a try, anyway, if you like that kind of thing (but maybe after the first few episodes... the show REALLY changes around episode 5 or so).

Well I just like scifi/fantasy things and British things. very few American sit-coms amuse me. And all of them have been cancelled or gone off the air.

[identity profile] ncc-gqmf.livejournal.com 2012-01-21 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I was just figuring if you like Ab Fab, you might like another show about middle-aged lady friends who drink too much wine and judge people. It's not as mean-spirited, but Christa Miller's character is clearly a descendant of the Ab Fab ladies.

But blah blah easy target American sitcoms are stupid, yawn.

[identity profile] finmagik.livejournal.com 2012-01-21 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I try to watch them, I do. But Most of them leave me cold. I did like Scrubs and Arrested Development is like crack.

[identity profile] ncc-gqmf.livejournal.com 2012-01-21 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
It's actually by the guy who did Scrubs, Bill Lawrence, and one of the stars was a regular on that show.

[identity profile] finmagik.livejournal.com 2012-01-21 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
I'll Netlfix it. As my TV doesn't work.

I agree that they overdo it a bit, but I also think it's something that would realistically happen, especially once they became popular on the internet. Whenever two men in the media are BFFs, everyone on the internet seems to assume they're banging each other.

[identity profile] piepeloe.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 08:26 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yes, I think the comments by the press make complete sense. There's a reason we all know what they mean by 'confirmed bachelor' after all. Plus, they want an angle for this story and this would be a juicy one.

I'm more annoyed by the comments like the one from the pub owner in Hound. I loved it at first and was thrilled that they had some gay characters that weren't stereotypical like 'Jim' had been. But then I started to think about it. Was this comment supposed to carry more weight or be funnier because it was said by a gay character? Insinuating he had gaydar or something? Because otherwise he's just assuming any two men who travel together are a couple, and I doubt that's true either.

I hate it when people get nitpicky like this and I don't want to see anything behind this. It's probably all meant in good fun.

I did love the fact that Irene Adler asked if they were a couple. Or at least, if John was jealous. At first I thought it was going to be yet another in a long line of similar remarks. But then there was that exchange of 'I'm not gay/I am, yet here we are.' It almost give me hope they might take all the comments somewhere. At least it's a definite acknowledgment that it is a possibility even if John is straight and Sherlock...Sherlock.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-20 08:43 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah, completely agree with you there.
