You have a friend who can't be in a romantic relationship... okay? I have a friend who shouldn't be in romantic relationships. I don't see how that means a damn thing.

It is possible for two men to love each other without there being any romantic feelings.

NO FUCKING KIDDING. Look at EVERY SHOW OUT THERE EVER. Having ONE SHOW depict two men who are friends and become a couple doesn't mean SHIT compared to the huge number of shows that have two main male characters who are just friends. It doesn't.

I am so fucking fed up with people saying how it's such a ~shame we want them to be gay because THEY CAN JUST BE FRIENDS GUYS OMG WHY CAN'T TWO MEN JUST BE FRIENDS.

Newsflash: THEY CAN. And the fact that they can has been thoroughly demonstrated in EVERY other movie, EVERY other show, EVERY other book. Jesus fucking christ, WAKE UP.

Dang. Hear, hear.

It's hilarious that you actually have to point this out to the people in here
Did they get their TVs from a bizarro world full of gay lead characters in relationships? If it's like that then hey, I'm willing to trade for the shitty bromances I see everywhere I look because frankly I've had it with them.

[identity profile] curseangel.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
I know, right? Like I said below, if any of these people want to point out these shows with male leads hooking up left and right, they sound like the kind of show I'd like to watch!

These people are really pretty obviously homophobic, though. I mean, come the fuck on -- if you can't even stop for a bloody second and realize that fandoms do not equal the shows they're derivative of and that 99.99999999% of shows feature straight male leads who are friends with other straight men and who certainly are not in relationships with other men... you've gotta either be homophobic or completely delusional.

Calling them "homophobic or completely delusional" is going a step too far. I think you are reading too much into what they are trying to say. The existence of a crapton of heteronormative TV doesn't suddenly make it not true that people slash characters that aren't seen by their creators as couples.

If you'd like to attack the sentiment, a better tack would be to point out that 'no they are just friends' is most often said by someone defending a canon friendship from someone who IS homophobic and has mistaken the characters for a couple, and you can go into all the implications and repercussions of that.

...No It isn't. Most of the time it's used by people that think that gay relationships are a taint in the special deep manly friendships. If you need an example you can simply take a look at the moronic answers below.

The existence of a crapton of heteronormative TV doesn't suddenly make it not true that people slash characters that aren't seen by their creators as couples.

Except no one is saying they're couples. That's the point! The creators evidently are using homoeroticism as a way to grab attention but then avoiding following suit with it because they don't wanna show icky gay men on TV. That is homophobic behavior and it does generate a casual homophobic attitude among the viewers, to the point where it's common to think that a show is only okay if it's gay up to a point, if it goes past that it spoils.

Oooh. Temper, temper.
Two men ARE allowed to love each other without it being romantic. Whether you like it or not, oh Queen of the Hissy Fits :P

GASP! NO! I HAD NO IDEA! OH MY GOD

THAT'S TOTALLY NOT WHAT MY WHOLE COMMENT WAS ABOUT

HOW MEN ARE CONSTANTLY SHOWN LOVING EACH OTHER IN A BFF WAY RATHER THAN A ROMANTIC WAY BUT NEVER THE REVERSE

I AM STUNNED. YOU HAVE STUNNED ME.

OH MY GOD THIS IS A REVELATION I NEED TO SIT DOWN.
