I mean, the whole reason (well, most of the reason) they get smashed is so they can act silly without being self-conscious.

Or you know, because it feels good. IE. the number one reason why anyone does any kind of recreational drug.

Admittedly I am talking mostly about alcohol use in this case. And excessive alcohol use at that.

Aaaand in my experience for those who drink it excessively, they feel like crap for either half the night or the whole day after, they don't remember a lot of what the 'feel good' part is, and when I have asked them why they do it is because they 'want to have fun and let go'. Using my brother as a example from when he was a heavy drinker, and from what he talks about other people, it seems that societal pressure to act like everyone else and to not 'be gay' is a big factor. Of course, my brother was also in a frat at Ol' Miss, so it might not carry on everywhere.

As for drugs... yeah, when excessive it's mostly to feel good and avoid the pressures of their lives, or perceived pressures, or depression. Or they get addicted which sends them on a spiral, in which case my 'I feel sorry for them' still stands.

Aaaand as I said, this is all implying the excess that the picture above is showing. Not talking about very casual a couple drinks/occasionally smokes up people.

The hangover is part of the fun. It's hard to explain. Some of my best memories of parties are actually of a group of us hanging out on someone's couch being hungover to hell the next day.

I think one of the conflicts is coming from how people interpret this picture. For instance, between my bro and my sis (both who go out and party and get drunk)-

Bro: Got wasted multiple times a week, the vast majority of his activities revolved around drinking excessively with friends or doing drugs with friends, was very self-concious when not drunk to the point of being overly defensive. Affected his college work to the point of having to take a year off and almost ended up in jail.

Sis: Goes out and parties once or twice a week and gets drunk (not quite wasted). Meets friends who she both drinks with and does other crazy stuff with that doesn't involve drinking. So far has better grades then both me and my brother despite me being a bookworm.

The way my sis does it I find fine and healthy, and just another way to enjoy party scenes. I don't mind that, though I personally don't like doing it. The way my brother does it is something I find incredibly negative and harmful.

If the secret is talking about the way my sister does it, then I do find that eye-roll worthy. But I interpreted it as the way my bro did it. *shrugs* If that makes any sense?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-20 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
I interpreted it the other way, and am still not sure I completely agree that the other option is the worst thing ever either, but yeah that makes sense. :)

[identity profile] kindlycoyote.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, depends on how in the extreme the other option is. I understand getting drunk fairly often, and getting wasted occasionally, but if drinking and partying are severely affecting your life I find it bad.

Then again, if being a Otaku is making you drop out of school and that outfit you bought is keeping you from paying bills (or made you severely mooch of your parents for necessities), then I judge that as bad as well.

Really, the issue is the trouble my bro caused the entire family and himself. He is alright now, but for awhile there it was worrying and he was putting a strain on his family, sooo... Yeah. Extremes- they tend to not be good!

Drink water between alcoholic drinks
And/or do another substance (carefully)

Problem solved

It's really easy to avoid a hangover if you know what you're doing, PACE YOURSELF and don't act like a dumbass

[identity profile] kindlycoyote.livejournal.com 2012-01-20 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Hah, true. And I usually follow that when I do drink, but good gravy do a lot of the people I know don't. From what some of them say drinking water at a party is cardinal sin! (However, my experiences might not be everyones. *eyes friends and relatives* ... Yeeeaaaah. I blame Frat culture, I guess?)
