It's different for different slash pairings. Sometimes you get the feeling that they're falling in love and there's loads of sexual tension and longing crammed inside them, and it feels like they're building up to something and have got to crack under the strain sometime. And sometimes you get the feeling that they are absolutely, genuinely in love with each other, but are relaxed and just fine the way they are with nothing pent up (submitted for your consideration: Alan Shore and Denny Crane). And people have different opinions over which scenario applies to a pairing. You see things one way while other people see it a different way. Some people would think making them an actual couple would ruin them, not because they're gay, but because it would be jarring, or unneeded, or something. Opinions. They're different.
