I ship really hard Sherlock/John, in almost every combinations : best friends, partners, soulmates, lovers (without the sexual part because yes you can fall in love with someone without wanting to sleep with them, plus with Sherlock and John straight well...you know) but OP is right: the second season was all about John falling in love with Sherlock (love in whatever sense you can interpret this) and the episodes were all about their relationship and the others characters of the show.
I like the fanservice parts, I like the gay jokes "ooh you're a couple ooh you're together ooh" but at the end of the Fall, the jokes weren't so funny: they were sad to watch because somewhere they felt... true.
I felt like John, loving his friend so much and feeling that's not quite right because he's straight, and in a heteronormative society. I want to see in this show how it can be normal to love someone without wanting to shag them, to feel they're "the one" without being pressured by those bits of jokes.
I'd be glad to see for once a true platonic romance on screen, really. But I really want Sherlock and John to be happy together, that's all.
