First off, I adore Sherlock/John. I definitely ship it in anyway you like: soulmates, bromance, sexually, nonsexually. Mostly because I find the relationship fascinating.

However, I don't really find it to be a problem that they don't include a romance, be it Sherlock BBC or any incarnation. For me, though I love the pairing, Sherlock Holmes is about the mystery and the cleverness and the reveal. It's not about the romance. It's the thrill of the chase, deduction, reason, and success. It's Sherlock showing off his mad skills and John being the BAMF that he is. Sherlock Holmes is a mystery, not a romance, and I don't mind it that way. In terms of their relationship, it's about Sherlock realizing he has feelings, if only for John (whatever they may be). That he is a good man. For John it's sating his lust for adventure and giving him something to live for again after feeling lost after being at war; it's something/someone for him to focus on to make him happy though also a exceedingly frustrated (regular or sexually, you decide).

You might also say there's no reason they can't just put it in, right? Still focus on the mystery but give a nod to the epic romance obviously right there between these two? But I can't really think of what it would add that isn't already there. They have a beautiful (if sometimes destructive) relationship that doesn't really need anything else, nor to prove it in any way. It's beautiful and thrilling no matter what, so I can't see what an "I love you" here or there would add besides some lovely facial expressions and a breather from some intense (for some people) UST.

I guess I'm less wondering when they're going to make out and more so wondering "Gee, how will they figure it out this time? Zoinks!"

Still, it's a lovely pairing and I'm sorry anon will likely have to rely on the gorgeous fanart, fic, and videos that the fandom so generously provides to sate the Sherlock/Watson lovin'.
