MJ single-handedly revolutionized music videos by using new kinds of technology and choreography. Also, he's not called the King of Pop for nothing. Pop wasn't always pop until he helped define it (pop, disco, funk and soul, all together and it was still considered pop).
The Beatles were notorious because they were thought to be the first "well-behaved" rock band compared to others in the business, despite their long hair (often a symbol of punks, rebels, etc) and that the fact that no-one in the band was too "square". And it goes without saying that people liked their music - music they wrote, sang and played themselves. They weren't products of the industry, because there was no actual industry before them. Nowadays they're considered one of the cornerstones of rock music, even if they're more pop rock than actual rock.
You may think neither sound special to your ears, but do give credit where it's due.
(Clearly, I have a lot of ~feelings~ about this.)
