All the welcome messages say their house is the best? Seriously? Well I stand corrected, but I happen to find that a very obnoxious choice on the writer's part regardless.

Nope, they don't. Raven claw says they're the "cleverest and most interesting", Hufflepuff says they're the "friendliest and most decent", and Slytherin says they're..., excuse me, I'm taking a moment to cringe in embarrassment, "the coolest and edgiest".

Literally speaking, only Gryffindor says they're the best. All of them are pretty obnoxious, though.

Huh...it does seem kind of disingenuous then to say they all say they're the best. I wasn't bothered at all by it saying Gryffindors are the "bravest and boldest." That's canonically Gryffindor's strength, and I like the idea of each house having its own strength and all of them being strongest together, with none standing out as the number one house. I'd actually believe it was just Percy talking if I hadn't spent seven books rolling my eyes at JKR making it clear that she thought Gryffindor was the absolute best. It's not just a little boasting and friendly house rivalry; it's honestly divisive bragging at that point.

Also loling at "coolest and edgiest." Hahaha oh wow.

Yeah, I agree. Say Gryffindors are the nerviest, even say they're natural leaders, which always seemed like it should have been part of their description, but that's a far cry from out and out saying the best. Particularly because I don't know if I actually feel like that's something Percy would say- Fred and George, Ron, sure, but Percy doesn't strike me as the type to limit himself to "the best" when he could give you an earful about why exactly that is.

Lord, all of the house welcomes read like divisive bragging in their own right, but the sheer brevity of the Gryffindor speech makes it stand out, particularly since Percy says they're the best twice.

WHY, "EDGIEST", WHY. I AM DEEPLY EMBARRASSED ON BEHALF OF MY FICTIONAL HOUSE, AND WANT THOSE DAMN SCENE KIDS TO GET OUT OF MY FICTIONAL COMMON ROOM!

Total agreement- I actually thought Hufflepuff's was okay until around the WE'VE PRODUCED ALMOST NO DARK WIZARDS PART, and then I got annoyed too.
