It makes me wonder (not in a judgmental way, honestly curious) if some of the people really pissed off about this love the book nearly as much as they love the musical. Because the musical is an adaptation itself. There's even a Les Mis anime, I think (never saw it though). I love to see new interpretations of things I like -- it's part of why I love fic. I think there are a thousand awesome ways to tell the same story, and part of what I find interesting about stories is seeing how different people tell them. And if that's not your thing, hey: nobody took the original away. And unless by "the original," you mean the unabridged book, you're also talking about an adaptation, sooooo.

Gotta admit, I'm usually a book snob and a 19th century lit geek at that, but, um, I like the musical better. I mean no disrespect to the novel, but hundreds of pages devoted to Waterloo, the Parisian sewer system and the ins and outs of convents, among other things, did me in.

It's not so much the integrity of the story I'm worried about as the quality and type of the singing, because it's really the score that keeps me coming back. Although I have to say, I'd rather a middling singer who was a talented and interesting actress get this role than a pop star who's up to neither the demands of the music nor the acting the role requires. Even so, I sort of agree with the OP. Lea Michele is certainly more qualified, but she just irritates me in a way that Taylor Swift does not.
