Honestly?

My 9 year old nephew had only the vaguest idea of who the muppets are before the new movie. The last Muppet movie in theaters came out before he was born. The only way he knew anything about them was when they'd cameo on Sesame Street.

Most of the target audience has not grown up with muppets. The plot was incredibly well done IMO because kids don't know who the muppets are. The only people who knew who they were are 20+ year olds who remember when Muppet Treasure Island came out in 96. My nephew was actively against seeing the movie because to him muppets were "old" and not "cool". His opinion did a complete 180 after seeing the movie, but to the target audience? Yeah, the plot is incredibly relevant.

I'm not saying a good intro movie wouldn't have been good. I understand that a good market for the muppets is children, but children were never the main target audience for the show and characters to start with, no matter how family friendly the franchise is. I digress...

I just meant that the overly done "muppets on skid row thing" was off putting to me personally, and I know I'm not alone in feeling that way.

I am glad your nephew liked it though. Has he seen Muppets from Space? That is WAAAAAY better than Muppet Treaure Island by leaps and bounds. :)
