Except when everyone's wearing a costume, I don't think I've ever seen character variance in manga besides hairstyles (or maybe cup sizes). And with body type, everyone seems pretty unanimously skinny and leggy unless they're meant to be a comic relief character.

Me neither, but I'm not talking about manga in general, only the ones I read(the ones that were adapted from videogames), those usually have more detailed characters for one reason or another.

I don't mind the same bodytype thing when it's a more neutral one since I think in character design there is a lot you can convey by hairstyles and clothes, the problem is that superhero comics ignore all that by making most of their important characters into strong-jawed white dudes wearing spandex.

You should read more manga then.

Also, it's easier to forgive sameface with a cartoony artsyle. In superhero comics everyone looks at least semi-realistic, which makes the fact that they all look the same pretty disturbing.

Yeah this. When your artstyle is simplistic you either get sameface or you go for cartoonish exaggerations. There isn't really too much room for subtle differences. Though some artists get creative - the artist of Rurouni Kenshin was addicted to having lots of crazy height differences.

Also sameface only gets to be a big problem if you have loads and loads of characters, IMO - which American superhero comics do. Manga does sometimes, but if you have a small core cast a few facial types can work.
