Really? I seem to remember that there was quite a bit of good Eriol/Tomoyo fic. But this was back 10-12 years ago when the fandom was fresh.

It bothers me too that everyone is doing this. Tomoyo's only canon crush was Sakura, and it feels like the huge trend there used to be of people pairing her up with Eriol was sort of an attempt to "fix" her.

I don't have a problem with people shipping it, canon never said she couldn't like boys. It just feels really weird as a huge trend.

This. I don't care what people ship, but Eriol/Tomoyo keep kept getting treated almost as though it was canon.

In theory they should have just been an unpopular/crack ship (since Eriol is in a canon relationship with a different character), but the vast majority of Eriol/Tomoyo fans only paired them together because they didn't want Tomoyo to be gay.

It's just another reason why I'm always confused that homophobic people read CLAMP. There are plenty of shoujo stories out there that have no gay characters whatsoever. It's not like it's CLAMP or nothing else.

At a time where dubs tried to downplay Sakura and Tomoyo's relationship as nothing more than sisterly love AND the fact that the anime doesn't really confirm Eriol and Kaho's relationship (it's arguable, yes, but I was completely oblivious to Eriol and Kaho until I read the manga), I can see why people treated Tomoyo and Eriol as the "Pair the Spares" couple. Really, even some of the promotional art for the anime had Sakura, Syaoran, Eriol and Tomoyo together which made fangirls squee and believe they're canon.

In all honesty, I do like the pairing too. But yeah, I don't like it when they're paired in just because Sakura and Syaoran are together. The fangirls just didn't make the pairing look any better with the Kaho bashing and their insistence that it's canon. It's really a pity cause beyond the cliches and "pair the spares" trope, I think this pairing is fascinating and could use a good fic or two.
