That sucks. I honestly don't know what you'd do about that, but I'm sorry all the same. :<

I know how you feel, OP, but sometimes it's really for the best. There's always other fandoms and other characters out there for you to find and fall in love with; going back to the same well once it's started going dry really to kills your enjoyment of fandom and writing in general, or at least it did me.

But yeah. It does suck.

[identity profile] havemy-heart.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
I am in the same boat. I joined other fandoms and slowly started to write for them, but the one I love to write for the most? I seem to be the only one anymore. It really does suck.

I hope you can either find some inspiration or find something else to be passionate about, OP.

I drew one rare pairing from a series for almost 8 years straight (icon completely related), with very few deviations from them. But about 3 years ago, the ideas suddenly...stopped. I was horrified. I still love them to bits, but I just have nothing to contribute anymore.

But after some time drifting through fandoms, I've found a new pairing muse in a totally different fandom, and the ideas are pouring in again. I have less time to devote to fandom, but I have ideas waiting for me when I do.

Running out of ideas can be scary, OP. But like everything else is life, fandom interest fades and changes over time. Honor your roots, expand your horizons, and you'll find a new muse somewhere. <3

the ideas suddenly...stopped

I understand that only too well. I have a pairing I just ADORE (icon absolutely related) and I started on some crazy crusade to write a ton of 'fic about them. And I do mean a ton. I recruited people to my cause and an old fan of the pairing gave me their "Queen crown". But then as my friends started getting busy with college classes and real life stuff like friends groups and D&D, I lost almost all of my inspiration to write-- period. Not just for the characters, but for the entire fandom.

What keeps me in a fandom are the people in it, more than anything. I mean, when you've been in a fandom for 10 years the canon material is still near and dear to you, but you know it by heart already, there's very rarely something new to discover there. But the friends make continuing to write or draw for that fandom fun, especially when you can share your OTP/favorite pairings/characters with them. Once that's gone it's just...sad.

Though eventually I guess we can expect to be burned out on things, right? I mean, I still write for my "main fandom", but very sparingly now, when I used to crank out at least three one-shots a week! However, I've been reading in another fandom lately and I admit, I'm having fun doing a lot of reading and very little writing for once.

Absolutely agreed on the 'fandom is the people' thing. I'm still close to a couple friends from my older fandom who still draw for the pairing, and I still love their work to pieces. Just because my well went dry doesn't mean I can't enjoy the fruits of their labor. <3

I'm actually the opposite on the writing thing though; it's been YEARS since I wrote anything fandom related, save for a few drabbles. But this new fandom/pairing (once again, icon related) has had me writing more fic/drawing more art than anything since my oldest of fandoms. And the voices almost flow naturally for me; that's never happened to me before. I've always been one of those fan-workers who take forever on a piece because the words don't come out right or the art takes 5 hours to draw. It's nice.

[identity profile] hooves.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
Right! <3

In my case, I still enjoy writing meta and discussing things. We're a small but dedicated fandom, and we all know each other despite our cliques, so it's really nice to have an online home, so to speak.

So I take short breaks in other fandoms, sometimes by writing, sometimes by reading. My latest reading-fest is in Harry Potter (if someone had told me I'd be reading HP fic a year ago I'd have punted them, yeah right), and though I've gotten small ideas, I've got tons of fic to read (vs. my small fandom where there's rarely anything new and good) aaaand I've been shut in for a few years so my creative well is just dry for that reason, too. I suspect once I get back to work (finally, next month) I'll feel more like writing, and of course then I'll never stop.

As for art, well, the best I can draw is... /points to icon, so I try to avoid that side of fandom. I have at least 5 close friends in the fandom who can do professional-quality art, so I just stick to writing because I'm better at it. (Though I have a few people who are ten times better at it than me, too. Haha!)

Off topic, but... icon love. ♥

Nothin' wrong with a little icon love. Thanks! <33

There are plenty of Converse-clad characters out there for you to find and fall in love with ♥ I write one myself, also in a tiny fandom!

[identity profile] lilweirdomokyn.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
I'm in a similar situation with a pairing. The fandom itself is already small, but now I'm seriously the only one left who writes for a certain pairing, and while I enjoy the occassional "You made me ship it" type of comments (since I like letting my ego inflate to the size of a balloon), I'd like it if someone else would also do something, at least so I wouldn't feel like a loner freak (more than usual, anyway).

(Xion/Kairi icon not actually related, I just crack-ship them and wanted to use the icon.)

Are you me nonny? I know exactly how you feel.

I know precisely how you feel..

Thankfully I'm inspired for other characters, too .. which has lead to a situation where I began writing something new, a pairing that people had not previously thought of before, and people liked that pairing SO MUCH they began to ship it, but now I think I'm the only one writing that pairing as well.

I don't know what could inspire you more. Try to get conversation going on why others ship it? Picspam?

...Yeah, my favorite fandom is dead, and hardly anyone else wrote my preferred pairing anyway, and now I've kind of written everything between when those characters met to a couple different alternate "up until the ends of their lives" scenarios.

I'm seriously thinking of starting over and writing AUs of my own headcanon, with them meeting in a different way and getting together in different ways and so on. Not that anyone but me wants to read them anymore anyway, but... I still want to write them. :/
