Yo.

Can I join? ♥

You're being driven forward by someone you respect and admire, which I personally think is a little more important than what they do for a living. [Provided they aren't a spree killer, or something to that effect]

This. Plus, artists of most any kind (especially those that make people happy) are definitely worth respecting.

If you haven't seen it, OP, I highly recommend trying to get your hands on the season 3 Muppet Show DVDs for the old special Jim Henson did on puppetry. He talks about making puppets and performing and historical puppets and different techniques. It's easy to say "he was just a puppeteer" but really, he was an artist. There's an episode of Great Performances about him where he's shown talking about how he could stand perfectly visible while playing Kermit, and be talking without trying to do any ventriloquism and people would still naturally talk to Kermit "because who cares about the guy with the beard?" That's art. And he was passionate about his art because it brought people joy.

That sounds like a good role model/motivational source to me.

Jim Henson has been my inspiration and role model for as long as I can remember. You're doing it right, OP!

[identity profile] atlanticmelody.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
I was born in 1991, I'm not entirely sure when the muppet era started but I defintiely grew up watching their movies. If someone were to ask me who the puppeteer of kermit was I'd have no idea. I'm sure he was a great guy though, I just wanted to say this because I'm pretty sure it's not just a younger generation thing.

I'm not sure where OP would draw the line, but I would consider someone born in 1991 to be part of the "younger generation."

/old

I see your point,(sort of..I'm 20 I'm not that young D:) my mind just automatically goes to children when people talk about younger siblings I guess.

[identity profile] tigerdreams.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
Don't mind me; I'm still having trouble with the concept that anyone born in the '90s is old enough to buy cigarettes.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
You aren't even twenty. You are the younger generation.

[identity profile] atlanticmelody.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
I am twenty actually.. But I assume you mean I haven't been twenty for very long? everyone is a younger generation to someone I guess.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
I'd say anything post-Henson's death (i.e. anything from the early 90s onwards) is considered the "young generation". The Muppets peaked in popularity during the 80s, but after Henson's death it slowly started going downhill (even though some genuinely great stuff was produced in the 90s - I'm looking at your Muppets Christmas Carol) until it got to the point where the Muppets were no longer profitable in the early 00s.

I was born in 1990 and grew up as a child watching the repeats of the Muppet Show that was on every Sunday afternoon. So there are some of us of the younger generation that did grow up with the Muppets to an extent and understood who Jim Henson was at a young age. You shouldn't have to have been a child during the Muppets boom to appreciate the work of Jim Henson and the passion and enthusiasm he had.

:) Usually I just make snarky comments on awful secrets, but this one speaks to me. Jim Henson is one of my idols - that doesn't have to be a secret!* He was an artist, he was passionate about his work and he brought so many people joy - myself included. I'm in my 20s and just watching him talk about his work makes me smile.

*Yes I know it's ironic because I'm anonymous, but I don't have an LJ account :P

[identity profile] omorka.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
How dare you suggest that Jim Henson wasn't a spiritual leader? How could anyone who touched so many people be anything else?

Seriously, Fraggle Rock = better moral code than any scripture I've yet encountered.

[identity profile] puppetmaker40.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
There are a lot of us out here that learned a lot from Jim Henson.

I am a master Puppeteer and a puppet builder partly because of Jim.

His work is a touchstone for many people and his philosophies are followed by many.

If you haven't found Jim's Red Book, I suggest you take a look at it. It is an insight into the mind of the man himself

http://www.henson.com/jimsredbook/

I was fortunate enough to have met Jim a number of times and I always found him delightful to listen to and a true gentleman. I loved watching him talk to children.

Aww, well teach them about him and his awesomeness

I'm already there with you, anon!

[identity profile] intrigueing.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes I almost wish the Muppets secrets would stop simply because I get all mushy and distracted every time I see one.

Then it makes me happy to know other people feel about them the way I do, and don't want them to stop. :)

I'll join. Jim Henson was amazing.

[identity profile] bogboblin.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 09:59 am (UTC)(link)
Much better sort of role model than a religious or political leader!

[identity profile] endis-ni.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm, do I want to emulate someone gentle, creative, warm-hearted and decent in all his dealings with everyone?

Why yes, yes I do!
