You could always start off in kink-memes? You'd be anon there, and you'd have a huge list of prompts to choose from.

I second the recommendation to start out in a kink meme; if things don't go as you want them to, your anon self (or sock puppet) can disappear easily. If porn isn't your thing, don't worry: all of them have fluff/plot/gen prompts running around too.

Don't be nervous, just jump in! And use a beta/get construtctive criticism if you're worried. That's the best thing about writing; you can always try new things and get better, there's no ceiling. :)

If you want to try out other fandoms, try the kinkmemes and go anon or create a sock-puppet journal that you can easily abandon if you need to. A sock puppet also allows you to have your fic beta-read and Brit-picked for ex. (insert country of --picking of your fandom choice if you're not a native of the show's origin). You may want to find kinkmemes for shows in your country of origin to help build your confidence. IOW, if American try writing in American-based shows first unless you're confident that you can write fine in other countries's fandoms or maybe start out in American fandoms even if not American. While there may be some American fans who will wank b/c you used the "wrong" word, I've not seen it and I've been around under various names online since 1989 (which is not me saying that it doesn't exist somewhere). I only say this 'cause of wank. Most will just say what's that or this is the word you want and are polite about it. I just usually smile and say oh, the author's British or Australian or something and maybe I'll tell hir the correct saying/word in American English. I don't really people who get all pissed about this.

I've seen so much wank b/c some of the British were upset an American writer didn't use the correct British word (for ex. American word: band-aids, British word for some thing: plasters). I doubt I'll ever write in a British fandom b/c of this wank; I just enjoy the fanworks by others who do (some of the wanks I saw were really vicious and I'm not mentally where I can shrug off negativity directed toward me very well right now). Just as I've seen anime fans taken to task by other, more knowledgeable fans for writing Christmas-based fanfics since generally the Japanese don't celebrate Christmas (a very tiny percentage are Christians).

Just dive in! I'm not the greatest writer but I love to do it and I just posted my first Sherlock piece about a week ago. It was tiny & unbeta'd but everyone who commented on it was really lovely about it. They're all so nice :D

I can relate, OP. I've always written in small fandoms, but now I have an idea for a Supernatural fic, and I really want to write and post it ... but it's such a HUGE fandom, and after fandoms in which everybody knew each other I find that so intimidating. I'm afraid of either getting bashed or just completely ignored because nobody knows who I am.

Yo - the Sherlock fandom may have some wank, but honestly - they're one of the most supportive fandoms I've been in. If you want an invite to AO3 so you can upload your fics there, message me - but also, don't be afraid to jump right in.

With "Alone On The Water" considered the "greatest, saddest, fanfiction ever" by the Sherlock fandom you...anyone really, can do better. Sherlock needs great, even good, writers. Submit something and have fun.
