Oops, this is supposed to mean "Subcultures will be judged by their examples".

by their loudest examples, not their best.

It's why aspergers and autism has such a bad name. The most visible people claiming to have them are just assholes using it as an excuse to be assholes (and usually the self diagnosed on a three question internet quiz type of asshole) which means that is how everyone is judged. Subcultures have to learn how to self-police if they want to escape that trap.

...so instead of employing critical thinking skills ("not all X are Y"), we are instead supposed to drum out all crazies in the world who share our fandoms. If we don't, it's our fault that our subculture is judged poorly.

Yeah, it isn't fair we have to self police, other people should make the effort to understand. And Daddy is going to buy me a pony, and we'll all have world peace before Valentines day.

If we don't self police then no one will, and the situation will keep replicating itself. It isn't fair, but fuck it, we don't live in a fair world and every sub-culture that has gained acceptance has done it because they self-policed, confronted and kicked out the wackos. That is just the way the world works. Live with it. The rest of the world doesn't care, and is happy to roll with whatever it sees, we are responsible for what it does see though.
