From what I can tell, the why of it is there's a strange appeal in talking to strangers about problems. They only know what you tell them but they barely know you, which creates a strange sort of bias. You can be more honest with a stranger because you won't see them the next day at lunch, you can say things more easily because it's faceless. There's probably more to it, but I'm rambling enough as it is.

You did what you could, and that's more than what some people would do. You tried, and if the other person didn't take the necessary step forward in return, then it's not your fault. I know that guilty is nasty and hard to overcome, but I hope you can accept that trying was enough, even if it didn't succeed. It wasn't exactly fair of the person to ask you, and responding is far from easy, but you didn't ignore them or something.

Oh man, look at me babble. I guess this really struck a chord with me, because I remember having this happen so clearly even though it's been years. I sympathize with how nerve-wracking it can be. >_<
