I'll agree with this generally, although I don't mind it when people bring it up for comparison. It's the whole reason I learned about Geass in the first place - I was on the Death Note forum and somebody brought up Lelouch and compared him to Light. Now I'm a bigger fan of Geass than Death Note, pretty much thanks to the characters. (I think Death Note is better plot-wise, particularly the first third or so)
Out of curiosity, were you part of the discussion of this very topic (http://cgkinkmemeii.livejournal.com/1213.html?thread=3973053#t3973053) on [livejournal.com profile] cgkinkmemeii?

I think Lulu is far more sympathetic than Light.

This.

I can sympathize with Lulu, but I just want to strangle Light most of the time.

I feel the same way. Light went the whole 'As God Am I' route, which made it very hard for me to sympathize with him.

You have summed up all my thoughts on this matter entirely in this secret holy shit are you me. ♥

I mean, I can get comparing the two to show the differences, but most people that do so seem to think they're totally the same, and good god I just want to shake them like, "no they're noooot". Lelouch and Light have such completely different philosophies omg just because they crazy-laugh and have questionable morals doesn't make them the same at all.

This is almost exactly how I feel about it, except I don't think Death Note is really all that better than Code Geass. It had ridiculous plot twists and super contrived coincidences, too.

[identity profile] nicotinecloud.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 09:40 am (UTC)(link)
My thoughts exactly.

[identity profile] timbeon.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
While I admit I didn't see much of Code Geass (about half of the first season, I need to finish that show sometime), Light and Lelouch didn't really seem to have that much in common besides being villain protagonists with severely questionable ideas of ethics and access to a supernatural power with very specific limitations. Light developed a god complex, saw everyone except himself as a disposable pawn, and only actively involved himself in his plans when it was absolutely necessary. Lelouch, on the other hand, felt like he was treating himself more like a wake-up call to get others motivated to involve themselves, thought others involved in his plots were too useful to be disposable (why would you sacrifice a queen or a rook?), and actively involved himself in his plans, often putting himself in the middle of the action.

Not saying one's ethics were more objectionable than the other, as the end didn't justify the means for either of their goals, but saying they're the same is a bit like saying Scar and Gaston are the same because they're both hammy Disney villains with easy access to a small pseudo-army.

I agree with all of this...except the part about Lelouch and Suzaku being more "complex" than L and Light. L and Light are both VERY complex, only "Death Note" is much more subtle in its character development while "Code Geass" tends to have more internal monologues and shove the character's thoughts in the audience's faces rather than leave it to the audience to watch carefully and figure it out. This isn't necessarily a critique of CG: it's just a very different style of storytelling. I'm with you on Light Yagami, though. I never felt bad for him though I do sympathize with Lelouch, L, and especially Suzaku. I sympathize with L because I don't see him as necessarily more or less evil than either Lelouch or Suzaku: all three have pretty good intentions but for various reasons can do morally questionable things.

So yeah, I think the leads of DN are just as, if not more, complicated than the leads of CG but I don't think they are nearly as sympathetic. The only people in Death Note I consistently sympathetized with were Light Yagami's parents, especially his mom. God, I felt so bad for both of them...
