Complaining about not getting enough reviews/views/kudos always comes off as entitled but...well. For a popular fandom, 200 views and 5 kudos isn't actually that much, you know.

/pokes can of worms

(Anonymous) 2012-01-28 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this is very true. Honestly, I don't think it's about the numbers themselves so much as the ratio of views-to-kudos. If less than 5% of the people viewing something I've written are leaving kudos or comments, I start to worry that maybe my work is just crap. :(

(Anonymous) 2012-01-28 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, really? Now I wish I wrote for a popular fandom ... because I write mostly for small fandoms, and my thought when reading the secret was, "wow, 200 views and 5 kudos? that's amazing! I wish I got that!"

(Anonymous) 2012-01-28 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not just whether the fandom is popular but also how chatty/supportive/interactive the fandom itself is. Some fandoms you'll get nearly half the people who read your fic leaving feedback. Some fandoms nearly everyone who leave kudos will also leave a comment. Other fandoms you'll get LOTS of pageviews but very few kudos, no matter how amazing the story, and NO comments. Comic book fandoms are, in my experience, especially bad for the latter.

[identity profile] agnes-bean.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
While I agree that it can suck when you know that not many people will ever read your fic, I also find that the few people who DO tend to be MORE appreciative in small fandoms. IDK. Maybe it's just me, but 5 kudos or happy review means more to me when I know my fic is one of the few for that ship, than they do when I know my fic is probably one of ten those kudo leavers read that day.

[identity profile] renne.livejournal.com 2012-01-28 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Get a more popular ship/fandom?

...KIDDING, we like what we like.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-29 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Word, anon. Just word.

[identity profile] mskye.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Kudos? Is this a Xanga secret?

[identity profile] itzechan.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
don't think so. Rather, in Archive of Our Own, the fic site pictured on the secret, you can leave kudos to the author instead of comments.

[identity profile] mskye.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
I see! I'm not familiar with AoOO (I've heard of it, and that's about it), but I used to have a Xanga when I was 15. I vaguely remember that they had kudos too.

[identity profile] netbug009.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
That's a low amount? Five people really liking my stories seems pretty usual to me. I mean, that's the rough amount of reviews per chapter a good one shot collection gets on ffn.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-29 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
It drives me insane how people wrack up reviews and kudos like it's currency. Get over it. While it's completely understandable that you want a response to something you've worked on, 99% of the reason you wrote it should be because you wanted to.

Five people liked your work. That's enough. Get over yourself.

People complaining about not getting enough recognition is really obnoxious. No matter how huge or small your fandom is.

[identity profile] blueonblue.livejournal.com 2012-01-29 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
AO3 lets you reorder fics by number of hits - it's a little demoralizing to see yourself on the last page. Of course, I could try finding a popular ship and becoming a better writer, but that sounds like work.

Sometimes I leave kudos on fics because it is for a rare pairing or fandom and I want people to write more of it.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-29 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
I think AO3 has a lot of problems with reader feedback, but whining about it yeah, gets annoying. I just think for a site that prides itself on being the top "fandom" place to put fanfiction, the feedback given there is just dreadful.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-29 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
If fanfic authors would quit their damn complaining about how reviewers review, they might get more reviews and/or kudos. The whiners leave a bad taste in my mouth for all fanfic authors actually since I can never remember which ones are the whiners and which aren't. One of these days I'm going to buy an account just so I track and ignore these whiners.

I loved the kudos on AO3 since it allowed me to say that I liked/loved the fic w/o having to type it up, esp. when I'm on my mobile device reading. Sometimes I'd comment.

I'm mostly a lurker and I don't enjoy having to find various ways of saying that I liked your fic when I'm reading several fics by the same author in a row and wanted to comment. Kudos let me do that w/o a hassle.

Not to mention that I and probably others feel weird commenting on how much I liked your PWP story! I did comment on someone's LJ once that I liked their PWP fic and they reacted like I was some kind of weirdo (wth, author, isn't that why you wrote it?!), so no, I don't comment on those at all ever since then. Left kudos though on the AO3 PWP fics.

But, no, that wasn't good enough for certain authors who complained that they'd rather get no comments than a kudo. They hate kudos with the passion of 10,000 fiery suns. They want it gone. By God, those reviewers can post and say they liked the fic instead of leaving a kudo, even on the PWP ones that people might be embarrassed to admit liking (admittedly, I did find this argument saner than the author who reacted like I was weird for liking the PWP fic she wrote. One of the whiners said that's why she wrote it in the first place!).

Well, screw them. They got their wish. Now, I very rarely leave comments and I no longer give kudos at all. No matter if I loved the fic and it's the fifth time I'm re-reading it. I might rethink this if the authors have a kudos policy on their profile/story (ie. state if they want kudos or not) but until then...../kanyeshrug.

Oh, and, if someone reviews something in a comment that's longer than I really this, it's only polite to acknowledge, even a "I'm glad you loved it," is great. It really pisses me off to leave a review of how much I liked your fic and quote my fave parts and talk about it and to get nothing, no even a, "I'm glad you loved it," in return. If I've done all that, I've really loved the fic. It doesn't not encourage a reviewer to comment. Well, not me, at least.

This, this, this.

I hate those people who get angry if you don't leave a litcrit review and just say "I really enjoyed this!" If I really enjoyed it, I probably didn't see much to get critical over! Also, it's not my job to become your writing teacher just because I read your fic.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-29 11:26 am (UTC)(link)
...did you come here from the link on lolita secrets too? x3

No, I've started to think that lolita secrets was dead!

There's a new comm called behind_the_bows that has kept up with posting so far! I just did a double take when I saw someone I recognized here (:

Thanks! I know it is full of wank and drama but I like lolita secrets. I am not fond of the hate/personal attack secrets but some of the other stuff is so hilarious.

TBH I basically use LJ only to follow lolita related comms, I'm on DW :)

(Anonymous) 2012-01-30 06:30 am (UTC)(link)
I can't help but like them too, it's perfect for little issues that would be kinda weird to discuss otherwise. LJ confuses the hell out of me and I heard that DW is better anyway, but I haven't bothered to make an account with either >.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-30 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with this 100%! And you know, sometimes I'm just too damn tired to leave a long comment!

Honestly, let's be frank: who gives a fuck about kudos. They're really nice to get, certainly! But when I say "who gives a fuck," I mean...it's a nice thing for someone else to do, but no, counting up your kudos as a writer doesn't mean anything except four people liked your fic. It doesn't mean that the person who got 20 kudos is a better writer. It's not life points.

You can go to AO3 and see a fic that has 20 comments, and all of them say "Nice!" or "Neato! Keep writing! XD" Then you go to another, see it has 2 comments, and both of them are wonderfully in-depth, reflective responses.

I know which of those scenarios I'd rather have.

And stating you don't want kudos...like, really? Who are you? The Diva Number One Bitch of Fandom?

No. You're not getting your crown. Sorry.
