It would be different that's for sure. Michael Jackson doesn't have and never did have, in my opinion, the same level of menacing seduction that Bowie had and still has. However, as someone else has pointed out, Jackson's a lot better of a dancer. But, and I think this may be sacrilegious, I feel that David Bowie is the better singer.

It's probably still be fun. It'd probably have an awesome soundtrack. Just different. And it probably wouldn't have the same sexual vibe that the story has now.

But imagine the fanfic....

I dunno. Michael has this aura of "lol pedophile" these days, or if not that this weird "child like" mentality surrounding him, that makes him seem almost unsexual. When I think about him too, I feel that.

But back in the 1980s he was very sexual and a lot of his moves and songs were all about sex and seduction. I'm not sure he'd have quite David Bowie's grand sexual seduction because I feel like Michael's seduction was always a little . . . friendlier, perhaps? But I just got to rewatch Captain EO at Disneyland, and I could totally see him pulling the role of Jareth off. My guess is that they'd've recast Jennifer though (to get someone shorter to play opposite Michael), and that would've changed the dynamics more.

I'm happy in any event. We get Labyrinth and The Wiz. :D Okay, okay, so The Wiz isn't nearly as popular as Labyrinth, but I still like it. But now I'm picturing Labyrinth like The Wiz and... I'll shut up now.

I grew up in the eighties and the MJ I remember and picture is the man who put out Billie Jean, Thriller, and Bad. And it still doesn't feel the same. The part I keep thinking about is how Michael reacts to that girl who he is enamored with in Thriller. I didn't even know that he was supposed to be interested in her and that they were more than friends until I was older. However when I saw Labyrinth on Laser Disc (and this is so dating me) I immediately caught the sexual and romantic potential.

I don't really think of Michael Jackson in the modern view, because he was such a part of my life growing up. My friends and I learned the Thriller dance I remember the big kerfuffle when he didn't come out a certain door to greet his fans and people started crying like they did with the Beatles in the 1960s.

His songs were sexual, I will grant you that. I mean that whole song "The Way You Make Me Feel" is really sexual as is the video. But even there and in "Remember the Time" when he kisses Iman I didn't feel that same raw sexuality that Bowie just exudes. In fact that whole kiss looked really uncomfortable to me.

So in my mind, it would have been a different movie.

But it all worked out and we did get the Wiz which I loved as a kid. And I liked Moonwalker - even the smooth criminal bit with Joe Pesci.

And I got my goblin king with the funny eyes and oodles of J/S fanfic out there.

I grew up in the 80s and had quite a LD collection myself, so you're not dating yourself too badly. XD I agree that Michael's sexuality was very different than Bowie's, and that it would've translated very differently, too. I think Jareth is intended to be both sexually desirable for Sarah as well as frightening/repulsive. It's a combination that David Bowie pulls off almost effortlessly. Michael Jackson, as you said, doesn't always make it obvious that he wants to be "more than friends." And I mentioned he's more "friendly", too. I knew tons of girls who were very into Michael Jackson's sexuality back in the 80s/90s (and even today), so obviously it exists. I think he could've done the role, and done it well, but I definitely think it would've been very different than the Labyrinth we got.

Of course it's all moot now, but it is a fun idea to consider.

Actually, thinking back on it now, it's funny to me that I was well aware of who Michael Jackson was back then, but I had no idea that David Bowie was a huge rock star until years later after seeing Labyrinth, ahahahaha.

Plus, Bowie's eyes and general look screams 'King of Fay-ish origins'.

Michael was cool in the 80's, but he doesn't has the look I would associate with ancient celtic/norse/english tales of fay (what? It's a mash up origins wise).

Agreed So very hard!

I kinda agree...though I think he definitely had a 'King of Fay-ish origins' look about him in the early 90s (where he was beginning to look like a pretty white woman, but still sorta looked like a pretty black man).

I sorta agree. I think MJ's sexuality was most potent when there was no one sharing the spotlight with him, such as in "Dirty Diana" (what I consider his hottest video, where he and the woman are never in the same shot), making it real hard to menace anyone. He would have been amazing in that scene where Bowie was, um, "dancing" with the goblins, but too coy and standoffish when there any anyone else but a muppet sharing the shot. I shudder to think what he would have turned the simmering tension of the ballroom scene into.

I don't think I'd even want to imagine that there'd be fanfic. Creepy...

I agree with you. Bowie is very seductive, and I like his singing voice.
Jackson could have done it, but it wouldn't be the Labyrinth I know and love.
