...It's really not, though. Cosmetics is a huge industry and one of the few that hasn't actually suffered (compared to some) in the recession. There are so many top-end brands, limited edition palettes and colors. When was the last time you saw designer brand toilet paper? Honestly, not everyone is interested in it, so it's understandable that not everyone cares about stuff like branding and packaging and special releases. But saying it's the same as buying toilet paper is like telling somebody who's paid for a limited edition anime figure that they've had shipped from Japan that it's the same as them going to McDonalds and getting a Happy Meal toy. It just shows a lack of understanding of another person's hobby (which is fine) but expressed in a way that's condescending and dismissive and insulting (which is not fine).

Not meaning to be condescending, but to me cosmetics are on a par with toilet paper or paper towels and collecting different brands of these items is just as legitimate as collecting cosmetics. They are simply items you use daily and most people discard the containers after use. Because some pay large amounts for certain brands doesn't make them any more useful. I concede that the containers can be creatively styled and collected as examples of the culture. More so than toilet paper packaging. But who knows, someday toilet paper might come in fancy wrappers too. Men's cologne bottles? They have some artistic value also.

Okay, please just take a moment to reread what you're saying.

You're directly comparing make-up to something you use to wipe your arse.

In a thread about people loving make-up and collecting it.

That is condescending. That's so condescending that I'm struggling to believe you don't mean to be condescending.

It's fine if make-up doesn't appeal to you. Maybe you don't wear it at all. Maybe you do wear it but it's not something you think of as a viable collection. That's all fine. Seriously. But you are dismissing other people's hobbies simply because they are not your own, and you're doing it in a way that isn't particularly nice.

Cosmetics may be "simply items you use daily" to you. That's fine. They are something more to other people, something to be valued and collected. That's fine too. But you're pushing your opinion as fact here. That's not fine.
