Are you me? I read the book for the first time when I was eight or nine, and nothing I have ever read before or since has captivated me quite as much as the idea of Bilbo just running out his door one morning without even putting on his hat to start on an adventure, with no idea what he's doing, no idea what's going to happen, no idea why he ever agreed to this, no plans, no prior notice, no discussion or contemplation whatsoever, just doing it because he was too confused and bewildered over having Gandalf randomly barge in to hassle him ten minutes before he was supposed to leave as though going on an adventure was the obvious choice after being inspired by the dwarves the night before to stop and sit down and think "this is actually a really fucking stupid idea" and decide that hey, maybe bolting from your town without telling anyone and with no warning or preparation one morning isn't something sane people do. And yet, it was still the best thing that ever happened to him.

I don't know how to explain it, but that idea, that your life can be completely normal one day and flip upside down the next for no real reason -- no drastic revelations or disasters or changes to change your situation, no real change in your personality or worldview -- just because you decide on a fleeting whim "what the hell, I'll do it", was the most awesome thing I had ever read and really influenced my personal ideas about life to this day. Like, yeah, that was incredibly stupid in a million different ways and could've been a total disaster, but it would have been worse if he hadn't jumped at the chance and had the rest of his life to sit around wondering.

(And yeah, that shot in the trailer of him jumping over the fence yelling 'wait for me!' pretty much captured the idea better than my imagination ever has. Even if the movie somehow turns out to be bad, that moment will make up for anything.)

Sorry for the tl;dr but I really fucking love this book :)

THIS! <3 <3 <3

I love the fence-jumpingmoment! that and when he asks Gandalf if he'll com back, and Gandalf answers: if you do, you'll not be the same.
and you captured it in your wonderful comment! ^^

awww, this comment really warmed my heart :)
I never thought about it that way, but making such a decision is really a weird and wonderful thing!

That's a lovely comment, actually.

Aw thanks! A lot of the time I get embarrassed because I tend to infodump my fandom adoration on comms like this, and then feel stupid and intrusive for not contributing anything to the OP's issue. But I just can't help it when a secret reminds me of something awesome :)

I'm the OP, and I loved your comment. :)

This was such a beautiful response. You captured it so wonderfully.
