Every Christmas for the past twenty or so years, my Aunt has gotten makeup brushes (expensive ones) as one of her presents. As soon as she does, she throws away the old ones, and when I asked her once she said that eventually there is wear and tear on it, as there is with everything. It wasn't in a six month period (which I think is pretty unreasonable, and she probably would too), but in 12 months.

I can understand throwing out eyeshadow makeup in a certain period too. Eventually the brush you use for your eye makeup might get some germs on it, such as conjunctivitis or something. Maybe that's why it should be thrown out, if you consider it something like a toothbrush.

Then again, I'm not one to be wearing makeup, so that entire world is a mystery to me. When I was 'goth' in highschool, the occasional bit of black lipstick, and nail polish would get passed around my few friends... and I've watched my mom and sister and my aunt put on makeup, but that world pretty much eludes me to this day.

Collection though... can understand entirely.
My other aunt and uncle from Italy brought my sister this makeup set that was modeled as candies (they got me one too, so I didn't feel left out... I still have mine, and now I think it was bit of a gag from them). ^_^'
