DIFFERENT PEOPLE ARE OFFENDED BY DIFFERENT THINGS AND YOU LOSE NOTHING BY NOT BEING AN ASSHOLE TO PEOPLE WHO ASK YOU TO STOP DOING SOMETHING

Some schmuck hurt her brother by doing exactly what you are doing: telling him that something is wrong with a loving and friendly nickname that people who care about and love him use.
This is exactly what people have a problem with. Listen, I've met some wonderful "Social Jusitice Fighters" but the fact is that the outspoken, over zealous ones are the ones that get attention.
Why? Because of exactly the event the poster told of. People getting bent out of shape over things that have no place being declared wrong or evil.
Yes, people are offended by different things. However you completely made the point that the poster was talking about.
For some strange reason, you took a personal nickname thats right a nickname that no one else would ever use on another person, and you said how YOU would be hurt. How YOU think people should consider how "others" should be treated. Explain, please, how in the HELL a personal and loving nickname for one individual, David a 34 year old man with Down Syndrome living almost independently, suddenly became an offense against you and "others"?
This. This. Is where "people" get so fed up. Taking things completely out of context and making an issue out of a absolute NON-issue.

When it's obvious from what I read in that post that being told he shouldn't use that nickname offended him! So you'd rather offend someone else and his immediate family just to save yourself from being offended.
You're right, it's not about forcing people to be PC here, and I can completely understand wanting people to consider other people's feelings. But shouldn't you include yourself in that? You're not exempt; if you expect other people to consider your feelings, you should at least attempt to understand and consider them. And if they're obviously being offensive, then you have the right to stand up for yourself, but the person who posted above seemed genuinely hurt and offended by something that happened to their family so I highly doubt they posted it to be offensive to you.
