I think there's an oversaturation on both sides of the spectre. Moe moe girls and bishie sparkle guys. Maybe it's because I don't watch much anime anymore but it's been a while since I've seen rough-looking guys as main characters recently.
Basically, pandering to the fanbase bring in more money, I'm more surprised that anyone is surprised. If you don't like moe shows then don't watch moe shows.

I miss rougher looking guys. I wish things like Berserk (okay, maybe not as violent, but at least in terms of character design) had a bigger presence in current anime. :C
