This is vaguely OT, but I'd like to know what people thought of the sequel too! I watched the original series ages ago and was excited to see that the "sequel" had two female leads, but I never really got around to watching it. Is it worth the trouble?

My housemate is an avid fan of Last Exile and she loves the sequel. Definitely worth checking out if your tastes are at all similar to hers.

If you give the series a shot, you'd learn that it's not moe fanservice at all. If anything, it feels a bit more like a show promoting girl power and friendship between girls.

You are totally missing out OP. Speaking as someone who was positive it was going to suck before it started airing; Fam is very good, not perfect, but really, really good. Personally I think Ginyoku no Fam gets some things right that the first series messed up on. For one thing Fam actually feels like a protagonist where Claus will always be a boring out of place side character to me(YMMV of course). You should really give it a chance, if you don't like it you can always stop watching.

I think people need to stop assuming that because the sequel stars girls it must mean that it's "ew moe fanservice crap." While I don't think it's surpassed the original, I'm finding it pretty enjoyable so far. Also I feel like Last Exile in general is, for me, one of those shows that works best watching it all in one go when it's finished, rather than as it airs. When I watched the original series was still being released in singles and only the last volume was yet to be released, so I pretty much watched almost all of it in the course of a week or so, and I don't think I would've cared for it as much if I'd been watching it one episode per week. I think Fam may end up seeming to be a stronger show once it's fully released and can be watched all at once.

I realize this is incredibly petty of me but the reason I couldn't watch it was because of how terribly the flying was portrayed. Last Exile did a great job of making the larger ship fights seem like essentially naval battles in the sky - and the designs of the smaller aircraft had the pilots placed very low into the body of the planes which took physics into account. Color me overly critical, but it was small details like that which really made Last Exile come alive for me - things like having to be roped down to keep from getting thrown off deck because of high winds at that altitude. Like, I mean, how do those girls stay in the cockpit of that plane? Magic?

The second series isn't as good as the first--at least, not so far--but it does not "ooze moe and fanservice". It is VERY light on the fanservice, if you can even call it that, and the girls are cute but that's not all they are. The plot is about their struggles during the war and their relationships with one another.

So yes, OP. You are being an elitist fan and it isn't doing you one bit of good. At least watch a few episodes before you write it off as moe crap.

Last Exile was my first anime, love it to death. I refuse to watch the sequel.. Just on principle lol Ceratin haracters from the first LE are dead, I don't care about anyone else..

yeah, there's some unseen backstory about a Guild ship catching him and you can hear his voice cry out 'ascending' during a quick scene in the engine room. he features heavily in Fam.

Personally, I prefer the sequel to the original series. I just like the characters and dynamics better.

There isn't any more fanservice in it than there was in the original series, so you don't need to worry about that. Just because a series has three female leads doesn't make it moe fanservice. :/
