Holy cows of India, someone who's read Otoyomegatari. That series is breathtaking.

Her work is so painstaking, I could totally see her traveling and burying herself in source materials in order to pull it off as she did for Emma. Her work reminds me somewhat of Kousuke Fujishima's, though his precision comes from his training as a draftsman. I really appreciate the work (love, even!) that must go into every panel. When I saw that it was being released in hardcover in America, I didn't even bat an eyelash. I hope I'm able to collect the whole thing.

...at the risk of gushing, yeah, I love it. I need to catch up, I've gotten behind in buying the books.

Probably because there isn't much for fans to add to canon, and we got the manga in bulk rather than having to wait for it chapter by chapter. When releases are small and come more frequently, they stir up more conversation and therefore, allowing more chances and time to build a larger fan base.

To be honest I can't bring myself to read it because the art just looks so bad. And the main character girl looks like she's 30, and I cant relate.

What? The art is gorgeous. Although I think it really shines most in Otoyomegatari

Really? I think the amount of detail and accuracy she puts into her drawings is amazing. It looks very simplified at first, but once you get used to it you start noticing there's always a lot going on. The faces may not be the most brilliant thing ever, but everything else (clothes, backgrounds, expressions) is superb.
But that's my opinion only.

And you don't have to self-insert into every series you read, you know. You can enjoy it without relating to the main character.

I love it too. Maybe there's so little fandom because the story feels fairly complete by the end.

But I'd love fic about the dancing girls, or Hakim. Maybe the Jones' time in India. Or more about Emma's training to become socially respectable. (I love a good training fic.) Or the secret background of the rest of the servants, especially the Jones' butler, Stevens. Or how Viscount Campbell gets his comeuppance.

I wish they'd reissue it because some of the later volumes are super expensive for fairly recent manga.

May I ask how? Because even though I haven't really read it yet it, other than the plot of a wealthy man falling in love with a maid which at the time would be so rare and cause such a scandal it wouldn't be worth it, it seems to be much more accurate than most 19th century England mangas/ animes.

but I get really ticked off at historical anachronism so I may skip if it is that bad. I had hope for a second it wasn't

I'm not AYRT, but Kaoru Mori's author's notes mention that one of her source materials was the autobiography of a woman who actually did go from being a maid to being the wife of a wealthy man who had fallen for her. (The kicker, which I swear makes it sound like a joke but it's apparently 100% real life, is that he actually had a maid fetish and after they married he kept making her wear her maid outfit for him in the bedroom.) So, while the plot is obviously something that wouldn't have happened often...

It's not an anachronism per se, but one thing that did stick out for me when I was reading is William and Hakim finding racy material in Mudie's Lending Library. Now that would be almost impossible; Mudie's imposed notoriously prudish standards on the authors who wanted their books to be loaned through Mudie's - and they were such a major buyer in the market, that often meant that publishers told even their top authors "You take out that racy stuff that Mudie's wouldn't like, or we don't publish your book." TBF, I think KM did admit in her notes that this was just her taking authorial license.
