I kind of hate when people jump to the trans explanation for any female character who disguises/dresses as a man. So I'm not in the fandom, but I understand your frustration.
ext_81845: penelope, my art/character (bored)

Well, in a way I can understand because there are so few trans characters in fiction. People want representation. But yeah, I DRESS LIKE A MAN SOMETIMES and I'm cisfemale. Not everyone who crossdresses is trans, FFS

Also treating people like shit because they interpret a character differently from you is a dick move. I mean, yeah if a character is explicitly trans (like Isabella in Paradise Kiss or Takatsuki and Nitori in Wandering Son) that's different, people shouldn't try to interpret it otherwise. But there are some characters where you can interpret their gender or even sexual orientation several ways

Well, yeah, not everyone who crossdresses is trans, but Naoto lived as a male, bound, and was considering surgery. It's a little different to a girl wearing trousers.
ext_81845: amuro ray from mobile suit gundam, in his underwear, from the doan's island episode (WTF?!)

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2012-02-04 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
I just started playing the game, so further research is needed (there are a lot of people who say that Yukiko and Chie are "definitely" gay and I can see it both ways, seems open to interpretation, so I wonder if Naoto is the same way)

IDK though I could see someone wanting surgery to remove breasts without being trans. It would make androgyny and crossdressing a lot easier

OP here. My point is that there are loads, and I mean LOADS, of female anime characters living like males for reasons other than identifying themselves as men. Characters like Oscar from Rose of Versailles or Ryuunosuke from Ranma were raised as men, but the characters themselves identify themselves as heterosexual females and have clear male love interests. Other characters, like Itsuki from Precure or Kaoru from Dear Brother, just dress like guys because they think being manly will get them closer to their sports-related dreams. SOCIAL JUSTICE brigaders need to stop trying to apply annoying tags in every piece of media they experience.

It's like a lot of male "crossdressing" characters identifying themselves as males and just crossdressing because they find it funny, like Mariya from Maria+Holic or the main love interest of the heroine in Kurage-hime.

Not!OP, obviously.

OP, it seems like this secret is less about Naoto than about you wanting to complain about social justice. There are definitely people who take it too far and police other people's character interpretations. At the core, though, it's about wanting to be inclusive and non-douchebaggy. You are not wrong for interpreting Naoto as a girl who presented as a man because she didn't think she could be respected otherwise. But calm down about SJ, we're not all like that, and you sound just as dicky as the ones that are.

Wait, seriously? I played P4 a while ago so I don't remember everything, but I don't remember ever hearing about her considering surgery. When did she say that?

(Anonymous) 2012-02-04 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
That was the main point of her Dungeon/Shadow fight. I saw it more as "no one will accept a female detective, so I might as well be male" situation than any gender ambiguity.

[identity profile] type89.livejournal.com 2012-02-04 08:11 am (UTC)(link)
She was never considering surgery. Her entire issue was, she wanted to be a detective, a largely male-dominated occupation, and because of the fact she was female and obviously so no one took her seriously. She says in her social link that she's comfortable with being a girl, it's the fact that her gender and age and appearance due to those factors cause people to believe she is incapable of being a detective.

I understand that in Western countries there is not nearly as much sexism and gender-roles as in Japan but I always feel it's a difference in culture that causes people to immediately assume Naoto is transgender. Most people from japan would simply assume she is a girl trying to be taken more seriously as one of the guys.

OK, in regards to her /SHADOW/ and it's whole SRA thing: Aren't shadows the exaggerated inner feelings of the person they represent? Naoto felt the only way she could be taken seriously as a detective was to pretend to be a boy, so her shadow exaggerated that by taunting her over the fact she needed a sex-change operation. naoto even acknowledges after beating her shadow she didn't want to be a man, just to be taken seriously as herself.
