To give them credit, after watching the anime, it's clear that the gender-specific pronouns problem is specific to the English version, since English doesn't have gender-neutral pronouns. I haven't seen past that point in the anime yet (it just aired yesterday and went up today), but I'm not expecting a difference in pronouns used.

Not that I'm confident in the anime's handling of this, since they've done poorly with Kanji's situation.

DDD: Noooooo, not my bb!

IMO, Kanji was handled fine, it was the situation that wasn't. For example, on the camping trip, both Yosuke and the main character pretty much say that they're afraid to sleep in the same tent as Kanji because he might rape them. Yosuke makes a similar comment when there's only one bed in the ~~love~~ hotel on the school trip.

Personally, I see him less as gay and more of an (understandably) confused teenager (especially given Naoto), but the anime hasn't even been handling it with tact.

The tent scene was from the game, so I was already braced for it. My problem is that Kanji's issues were treated as a joke throughout episode 7, and it made me nearly reach scream-into-a-pillow levels of rage. Even if we were to remove the sexual confusion from it, I'd still hate that episode because up until that point everybody else had their problems and insecurities treated with respect and his was just a painful amount of LULZ!1! (Though the issue being about him being gay, or at least questioning if he was certainly did not help)

This is why I'm really slow at watching new episodes, since I'm always afraid that there's going to be something else that's bad, or that something I didn't like from the game is going to be made even more frustrating to sit through.

In the game, it came across more to me as slight uncomfortableness. Whereas in the anime, it was flat-out stated that Yu was afraid he'd lose his virginity if Kanji stayed in the tent. I can understand someone being slightly uncomfortable with someone known for having bully-ish tendencies (whether they're accurate or not) and who may be attracted to you, but accusing someone of planning to rape you is another matter.

Yeah, that was one thing I forgot to add in my above comment; the tent scene was bad in-game, in the anime it was just awful. The only good thing I got out of it was seeing so many other people get mad at it too, so at least I knew there wasn't somebody who actually liked that whole bit.

That scene specifically, but how they've handled Kanji overall as well (and a few minor problems), has convinced me not to buy the series when it comes out on DVD, which really disappointed me, since I was so excited when it was announced.

You can have the choice to be a complete dick in the game, though.
