[Anne McCaffrey's Dinosaur Planet I & II]

Well... Anne McCaffrey and all....

(Anonymous) 2012-02-10 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
OP here - I know, dead. But she apparently finished the story two decades ago anyway. So annoying. What happened to everyone else who wasn't Lunzie or on the Zaid-Dayan?? There's no answer!

I think it's possible [livejournal.com profile] joules_burn was referring to the fact that for a long while Anne McCaffrey was opposed to a lot of fan fiction (she had rules about what was acceptable and wanted any works to be approved by her). She was less rigid about it later, but still had a no porn policy (http://fanlore.org/wiki/Anne_McCaffrey).

Exactly this. I read a few of her Pern books when I was a lot younger, but never got into them enough to want a fandom, but even I heard people very off put by her lack of support for creativity from her fans. I think some people who would have written things outright refused to after her rules were put in place. I think I remember when everything related to her books got pulled from ff.net? I'm not sure. Sounds like a cluster I recall from a long time ago.

Even her Pern series, which is huge, only has 541 fics on ff.net now. There might be some kind of underground posting on the topic? But I think she was pretty active about getting anything 'tarnishing' her work scrubbed off the net. She wanted absolute control about how her ideas were portrayed.

OP again - oh, right, I forgot about that. (Possibly because I don't have much interest in her Pern series and only recently rediscovered the other ones of hers I liked, so no attempts to find a fandom until now.)

So the books were good? I've been thinking about picking them up and reading them recently (I've been in a mood for sci-fi and dinosaurs).

(Anonymous) 2012-02-10 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
OP here - the books aren't perfect; there are a number of problems with both plot and storytelling (not to mention the lack of bloody resolution), and you're also going to have to read Generation Warriors (and probably Sassinak, because the last twenty pages of that are the bridge between the end of Dinosaur Planet Survivors and the start of Generation Warriors, and maybe Death of Sleep, which is honestly the best-written book of the entire group but not really central to the actual storyline, but it ends chronologically at exactly the same place that Dinosaur Planet does, so if you DO read that one on its own, you're going to be left with a cliffhanger).

Uh, tl;dr - good is a relative term, but I liked them.

[identity profile] sharkflip.livejournal.com 2012-02-10 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
You know that Sassinak, The Death of Sleep, and Generation Warriors are continuations/parallels of that story/world, right?

(Anonymous) 2012-02-10 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
OP here - yes, and there was NO RESOLUTION. Kai and Varian, for example, were picked up from Ireta in Generation Warriors and then no one heard from them or from the ship for the rest of the book. The hell.

[identity profile] sharkflip.livejournal.com 2012-02-10 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, okay. I guess I didn't find their storyline that compelling, since I read Death of Sleep and Sassinak first and got attached to those characters. The Dinosaur Planet books felt like an afterthought when read in that order, even though I know they were written first.

This is lame for you. :(

(Anonymous) 2012-02-10 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
Still OP - Death of Sleep I loved, but there's still some of that pesky "Okay, then what happened" with the Ambrosia project; like, they made such a big deal about it throughout quite a bit of the book, they find the planet, hooray. And nobody ever hears anything about it again.

I was also not particularly fond of Sassinak; I liked her as written from other people's points of view, but not from the passages that were more or less her POV. Since that was the majority of the book titled with her name, I can take or leave that one.

But yes, it sucks for me. :( (First world problems, though, I guess. Which is why this is on F!S.)

[identity profile] sharkflip.livejournal.com 2012-02-10 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Anne McCaffrey had that whole problem with not being able to write a satisfying overarching plot.

I liked Sassinak and most of Death of Sleep because they just sort of followed the characters along, in an engaging world. I like Space Navy With Aliens, and the setting was done pretty interestingly. The Ambrosia thing seemed pretty tacked on, and I choose to ignore the parts of Sassinak where she has Inappropriate And Contrived Relationships with her officers.

Anne McCaffrey wrote books about dinosaurs?

BRB library raid.

OP here - :P You're welcome. :)
