Toward the beginning of the series I agree. But from the few later episodes I caught, I think he's really matured. He's still not the sharpest object in the metaphor and can be childish but I think he's learned something about parenthood, and given the chance would take care of a kid. I don't know the Ben 10 fandom though.

I can't believe I'm saying this about a King of the Hill character.

I thought that character WAS a father. Isn't the running joke that his kid looks exactly like his wife's friend.

Yeah, and he's actually a really caring father if you can roll with the whole "my kid is the product of aliens artificially inseminating my wife and totally not because my wife has been cheating with my old pal for years" thing, and related lunacy ;)

Dale is a father, but he's not the biological father* of his child and there are some plot lines about his bio dad wanting to be in his life but not being able to because of the ongoing secret affair he's having with Dale's wife (Debbie? That's her name, right?)

Also I haven't seen much of the later seasons but early on he's not exactly the greatest father although he at least tries to be... and Joseph is kind of totally annoying

This show is surprisingly good and most of the characters are really well-written and believable but I feel like it gets overlooked by a lot of people because LOL TEXAS (btw Austin is full of dudes who are exactly like Dale, LOL)

No, Dale's wife's name is Nancy. John Redcorn even wrote a song about her later in the series about a squirrel named Fancy. I think the squirrel's name was Fancy, not quite sure.

He's not the biological father and that's very obvious, and there is the disturbing thing about the bio dad wanting to be in the son's life but I put some responsibility for that on him since he's the one who kept the secret affair going and didn't admit to being the father (at least didn't admit it to Dale, seems like almost everyone else knows) And Joseph is annoying but he does show love for Dale now and then.

I didn't see that much of later seasons (not because I didn't want to...) but as I understand it Nancy ended the affair and tried to be a better wife to Dale and that improved Dale's behavior to some degree too. He was still a goofball conspiracy theorist and not exactly my role model, but not a terrible father IMO.

I...kind of agree? Dale is a ridiculous person but would totally an insanely awesome father for a kid not really used to regular family life...
