I don't think many would approach you while you're on the computer because it would be impolite. Wearing fandom things also helps. I've been known to talk to strangers due to tats, bags, shirts and what not....randomly at supermarkets, subway lines and book stores. My hubs told me it's random and awkward as hell. Sad because the one girl I did this too at subway, we exchanged facebooks. The ones at the FoodLion supermarket who were wearing Eva shirts turned out to be cosplayers (pixiekitty from PA tho I doubt her and her hubs remember me) and the girl who saw my star trek badge at the book store turned out to like trek fic and we started talking about that. I've had good experiences from this random awkward shit.

Yeah, I don't actually mind being randomly approached if I'm wearing or carrying some fandom merchandise, or if I'm, say, looking at a specific book or movie or manga or whatever at a shop. But if I'm actually in the middle of doing something I find it rude and off-putting. I also have a major dislike for people reading over my shoulder, so if someone came up behind me while I was on the computer and went "oh, you're on FanFiction.Net!" I'd be at least a little uncomfortable about it.

Aww, I'm quite jealous. I used to wear a BSG toaster tshirt all the time. And a Farscape hoodie which I still wear pretty often. But nobody ever approached me about them. (Maybe because the image was more subtle than just the show logo, but still, a fan would get it!)
Also my bag had a 'vote roslin' badge on it for months. My Buffy 'watcher retreat' tshirt never got a reaction either. And I'm sure I've worn other, quite obviously fannish, things over the years. /lives in cultural backwater

I'm considering getting an IDIC pin to see if that provokes a reaction from anyone, Trek fandom is pretty big after all. :p

I really think it depends on the person. My hubs thinks I'm quite "weird" for going up to people I don't know and doing that. For me, the fandom stuff are ice breakers. Without them, I wouldn't approach anyone. I wear the stuff in hopes that someone will come up to me as well.

I have a warcraft tat on my arm. Every time I go to the post office, I talk to this one worker who plays it. We don't know each other's names but we'll hold up the line talking about it.

Another time in the food court, this GRANDMA saw my wow tat and came over to talk to me because she plays. Fucking mind blown.

[identity profile] misco.livejournal.com 2012-02-12 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
It's sad how envious I am of your random grandma wow fan story! :D

I suppose I just think it would be cool to meet someone who was a part of fandom in RL. Nobody I know (apart from my boyfriend who thinks it's majorly weird and off-putting, especially when he reads the occasional f!s post over my shoulder) even knows fandom exists.

[identity profile] vickyblueeyez.livejournal.com 2012-02-12 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
It's rare that it happens but when it does, the fandom stuff always sticks to me. I have a wow Horde crest on my car. One time at the chinese play, someone came up to our table and went "for the alliance!" And I played along going "Oh no you didn't!"

Another time we were driving, these people who didn't speak English kept waving at us. I rolled down the window and they said "warcraft!" and gave us the thumbs up. My husband and I don't even play anymore. No one really knows my Sailor Moon tat since it's of the Sailor Mercury planetary symbol. Same with my Fire Nation tat from Avatar. If anything, people think it's Star Wars. I plan on getting a Star Trek mirror verse tat and Slytherin crest.

There was this tumblr post going on a while back about maybe people should wear ribbons so you'd know what fandoms they were in. I wear shirts, have tats, badges on my messenger bag, stickers on my laptop and so on. If someone doesn't know my fandoms, they are blind. Here's that ribbon post http://eternallyanna.tumblr.com/post/16334795093/everyone-always-wants-to-be-able-to-identify-fellow

[identity profile] misco.livejournal.com 2012-02-12 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I would totally wear a ribbon declaring my fandom self. Although, if it became like a standard thing and all fans wore them then it would be even more depressing to not meet anybody in RL who was in fandom. At least this way, there's still a possibility I'm passing them in the street all the time. ;)

wow, thank you for this list!

I know the feeling; I'm in London studying abroad right now, and meeting people has been tough. I've started to meet people, but I keep wondering if they're into fandom, if I can feel comfortable talking to them about my fanfic writing, etc.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-12 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
well there's your problem. it's fanfiction.net

(Anonymous) 2012-02-12 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
That was what I was thinking. Livejournal at least would be better, though AO3 sends off the classier/more pretentious vibe.

I just started college, and one time in class, the girl I was sitting next to was on FFN on her laptop. I got all excited because there are almost no nerds at my school, but when I talked to her I found out we didn't have any common fandoms, anyway. :( /coolstorybro

[identity profile] finmagik.livejournal.com 2012-02-12 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
I met fandom people IRL.Other then my high school friends. One turned out to be creepy and didn't bathe. The other is a cute geeky cashier at the supermarket I shop at. She likes anime invader Zim. I wonder if she likes girls or has someone? And has a livejournal. But I think we move in different fandom circles. Didn't know about this comm.

Well I told her about this comm. Not that think she's cute.

And I didn't realize I had a crush on until I posted this. *blushes*
